1600 Alfa Engine

I thought these engines are so fantastic that I have decided to drop one in my Sunbeam Alpine. I need to identify the engine and also find out what gearboxes can be fitted. Any help

I love Alfa engines too. But the only engine swap I'd do in an Alpine would be a Ford V8. Always thought it would be neat to have a Tiger!

Erik's right, Tiger's are great.

Post the engine number you have & we'll identify it & point you in the right direction of a gearbox.

Cheers

While we're on the subject of Tigers...

Damn... Can't load the picture I wanted to of my Dad's Tiger (too big).

Anyway, the sound of that V8 is awesome. Although in the few drags my dad and I have had, there's been nothing between the Tiger and my Giulia (2.0l)

The engine has AR00536 23530 on it. Yes I agree a V8 would be great, the most popular conversion is a Ford V6 which goes in without bodywork mods, but that would be boring. The Alfa engine is not only a fantastic drivers engine but it looks fantastic as well. I just hope it fits!!

Well, this figures. 23530 isn't listed in the '72 edition of Fusi. Is the engine number on rightside of the engine by the distributor? Or is it on the bellhousing flange on the leftside of the engine.

Hi Jim

My copy of Fusi shows it as being a '66 Giulia Super motor.

Well it's just a stock 1600 motor, I hesitate to say nothing special, as every Alfa motor is special. With a bit of porting, some hotter cams & careful timing, it can really fly - not that it's at all shabby in standard trim.

Ciao

Can't help with non-Alfa boxes but there are two Alfa 5-speeds that will work; Junior boxes (as in GT Junior and Spider Junior) or non-Junior boxes. Both boxes have the same ratios except 5th gear; 0.85:1 in the Junior and 0.79:1 in the non-Junior.
Determining if you want a mechanical or hydraulic clutch will determine which bellhousing (there are actually two different ones for the hydraulic clutch versions), flywheel/ring gear, pressure plate, engine/trans spacer and, I think, starter that need to be used. Not nearly as difficult as it sounds though.

Greig,
My copy of Fusi shows the Giulia Supers being fitted with 00526 engines while the 00536 engine went into the Giulia Sprint GTV and Duetto. In addition, the 00536 engine was fitted to the later GT Jr. 1.6 and Spider Jr. 1.6 cars as well as the Jr. Zagato. Having said that, and with bondingi's engine number on the bellhousing flange, I'd put engine 00536*23530 as a 1971-1975.
But I've been wrong before....

No Jim, you are not wrong, you are 100% right, I'm wrong.......00536, 00536, 00536. Damn & I even have one of those cars.

Sheesh, a blonde moment there, yes, it's a '71 to '75 1600 motor, probably out of a GT 1600 Junior.

It's now my engine - bondingi couldn't squeeze it in past his Alpine's crossmember - and I want to rebuild my paper filter duetto engine and needed a crankshaft donor ...

It's not what I was expecting - the sump is in one piece (rather than the 2 piece sumps I'm used to) and it has an electrical sender device on the head at the back - again something I've not seen before. The oil filter is a spin off one. sender and filter suggest early 70's.

With the cam cover off it all looks nice and familiar tho :-)
