Misc. 750 & 101 stuff

I continue cleaning out and up & below is some untouched and unmolested pieces as removed in the late 60`s & early 70`s and put by. Just a quick list with some #s. If you need info or want something my email is above. No junk, all stored dry. For you "restorer" types. My hoarding is over....

Don`t post questions here. Use my email. Alfar7@aol.com
Don`t seek gifts. Threre is none, prices are barely fair as I know what they are worth and they will be worth no less later. But I would like a lot of this stuff elsewhere, and my wife has locked up the 2nd floor of her garage.

Solex 35 APAIG/0 439358 complete with all linkage (both bell cranks) on manifold # 1315 44065 never been off manifold.

Solex 32 PAIA5 73338 (with assembly tag 10112) on man. with no # Complete and has never been off of manifold

2nd carb as above 32 PAIA5 857840

Manifold for Solex complete with water outlets, thermostat & t-outlet. # 10560 1600 02
(large carb bores & ports)

Know anyone with something using Weber tipo 28 ICP3s?
I have a matched set # 78013 & 54976

Thick engine/transmission spacer from 750 series application

Some old Lucas & Marelli distributors but I won`t list.

I have a few 101 front covers. one with water pump, one with Oil pump and pickup (alum. have 2 pickups) for 101 20 aluminum oil pans (have 2, #101 20 0120000 Z, both in beautiful shape. No broken fins both almost perfect. One has oil temp sender.)

Some perfect cam covers, 50`s-60`s no vent, no dips, early type. Two without the 6 hold down clamping nuts, One with small alum socket head cap screw type that are held in with retaining clips under. All there in good condition.

Best for last. (will only go as package)
Excellent (full thickness 4.350) head from Very early 101 06 1300 Veloce (`59-60). Head has very small casting plugs in top of head, and oil galleries are drilled as in 750s and covered by steel plates retained by two 6mm studs. Complete with valves, Cam cover has early flat 750F type socket head hold down nuts with retaining clips. Never drilled for any air cleaner system support. Gaskets under hold down nuts are still good!
Veloce intake manifold has no corrosion! (no rust on the steel heater outlet (still shiny plating) or white corrosion on the water outlet at hose, has temp sender . No #s on manifold. Carbs are original 40DCOE2s #s 528 & 542 still connected with original yellow metal flex tube. They will require rebuild or at minimum freeing up the pumps which I may do. Or not.
Please don`t ask questions here. Use my email. Not PMs My Email! Alfar7@aol.com

Stuff

Gordon,
I`m sorry to hear that the Ausca Spider can`t make the trip the few miles to the convention. I told you that racing oil would gum up the motor using it on the street!

I will try to get the Austin Healey started and tow it there with a rope since you really should be there with the car. At least I will if I can still find my bucket seat.
You are such a puss! Drive that car in traffic! It`s been in the garage to long. For that matter So have you (and me)!

Richard,
Having just returned from the convention, I can verify that the Ausca Spider (along with its owner) were present at both the time trials (in the paddock) and at the concours (where it earned a second place in the "racing" class). As expected, a beautiful, and, apparently, a fairly trick Spider. Great to see the car and Gordon there. Oh, and it rained pretty hard for about 10 minutes during the judging, so Gordon may not be such a wuss after all .

It was great to see Gordon's car at the concours. It was kind of funny watching all the people try to figure out what it was and why it was not with the rest of the 101 cars. I too am still damp from that gully washer (to put it mildly).

So Jim, did your spare generator dry out?

Arno,
Well, maybe the spare generator is mostly dry, by now. Fortunately, I didn't need it on the way home. Maybe I should have carried a spare starter instead, since that did die on the way home. At least it had the decency to wait till the last gas stop before the starter solenoid (cheap Taiwanese knock off, not Bosch) quit. Even luckier, we were deep in Pa. Amish country, so I was able to outpace the buggies when I had to bump start it on a slight downhill. Now the search begins for a real Bosch solenoid, even though none were available in the early eighties.

Jim,
Try Christian Ondrak, OK Parts in Germany. If he hasn't a new one, he may be able to offer a Bosch made substitute, or possibly, a good used one. Shipping is not inexpensive, but Christian and his team are great to deal with. In your parts request, be sure to mention all these options. If you have not worked with him before, mention my name, and tell him I sent you for his help.

Unhappy Starter Failure (Bosch)

Jim,
Here's more. These starters are pretty good. If you take an OEM solenoid apart, it's failure is one of three things. 1) bad winding. Check with ohm meter. Bad = open winding. {NEVER happens} 2) Gooped up actuator piston. Clean cylinder and piston. {Common} 3) Worn linkage. Replace. {Sometimes}
Most starter failure is what us older guys call the Bendix drive. Fortunately, a younger BB member corrected me. Its a Spruell Drive now. It's on the motor output shaft. It suffers all kinds of failures. 1) Goop again. Clean. 2) Worn / damaged gear teeth. Replace. 3) Wear to inside of gear bushing. Replace. 4) Damage to shaft from ruined bushing. BIG DISASTER. Seek Psychiatric aid.5) Bad nose bushing. Replace. 6) Bad ring gear. {See #4} Here's some pictures.
Symptoms: Starter motor runs, but free, #1 Spruell Drive failure. #2 Solenoid. Starter motor won't run. #1 Bad connections! #2 Motor failure, usually brushes or commutator. # 3 Runs but grinds. #1 Spruell failure. #2 Ring gear #3 Solenoid. I hope this helps. I WON'T hijack this thread again!

Gordon,
Thanks for the info on the Bosch starter -- think I'll disassemble an old Bosch solenoid and see if I can revive it. I have another of the Taiwanese copies, but am reluctant to use it since the first one only lasted about 5k miles. As for the photo of the new Bosch generator -- I'd never seen a new one, but I must have made good guesses at the appearance when I restored a couple of mine. Maybe you should start a museum of all your NOS parts, so the concours judges of the future know what's right / wrong.

Can't read the Post It?

That's the Yellow RJ, the yellow! And it's NOT my name there! At any rate when are you going to build those 14,000 RPM Alfa engines cams? We need them tomorrow to race those guys with the 1750 whose names we cannot remember! BTW that was a Lucas pencil holder, converted from a Marelli using the RJ electronic ignition, with a fixed advance. I repaired it by making it back into a correct Magneti Marelli S119A GTA unit and throwing all that RJ racing junk in the dumpster, returning it to dual points and the correct mechanical advance. I HAVE WITNESSES IT EVEN WORKS IN THE RAIN NOW, and better yet, is a great pencil holder. Really dual ignition AND dual purpose! Fast AND sludgless!
