5 speeds in 750 sprints

In the latest issue of the Giuliettaletta, in an article about a Confortevole, it mentions that somewhere in the owners manual, it states that a 5 speed was availble as an option. I do not have a copy of an owners manual, and I would like to see this. As far as I am aware, the 5 speed was not available until 1959, and I have never seen a 750 series car that came witha 5 speed as original equipment, other than an SS.

I wasn't aware of this either. A tunnel case 5 speed is unheard of. I have an old Giulietta owners manual at home, I'll check tonight.

I've never heard of a tunnel case 5 speed. As far as I'm aware, the 101 gearbox didn't come out until early 1958, and the 5 speed version of it until 1959. That brings up another question..the first SS prototypes were built in 1957. I always assumed they had 4 speeds, but maybe I'm mistaken. Maybe the 5 spped version of the split case gearbox came out before the 4 speed version..and as early as 1957..

It is true!

If we are reading the same manual, the 5 speed in the tunnel case was available as a racing upgrade. No five speeds were manufactured for sale but the very expensive kit was available at dealers like Hoffman motors.
I remember having seen a publication somewhere where it had a cutout of the 750 tranny with the 5 gears. Let me see if I can find it.

From Lionel Velez; documentation that a 5 speed tunnel case did exist....I've never seen one...

My dearest friends,

I am going to concur with David (alias Oracio Sata) I shall qoute
from: Alfa Romeo Owners Manual "Uso e Manutenzione Alfa Romeo DC, a.
(s. Tec.) Pubblic. N. 5625 - 12/56 (8000) Industrie Grafiche Fratelli
Azzimonti s.p.a. - Milano - Via Monviso 21" Page 49; A richiesta puó
essere fornito il cambio a 5 marcie. In English: Per request, a 5
speed gear can be provided. I think It does not get clearer than
that.... I hope we can move on to the next subject of interest other
than five speeds on early Alfa. This more than validate Stephan's and
David's valuable input.

Lionel

Has anyone ever actually seen a 5 speed tunnel case gearbox? According to the documentation Lionel has provided, 5 speeds were available as early as very late 1956!

Dirk has an early lightweight Sprint Veloce. I wonder if it has the 5 speed tunnel case? Also, does anyone know the gear ratios in the box?

So there you have it.

Speaking of Lionel though, I am sure that you all know of his great work in Alfa wire harnesses; but I just want to quick mention that I just installed one of his harnessesin Ed's Sprint Speciale, and I'm still amazed at how good the harness was. It made the hard job of saving one of Alfas greatest cars a lot easier. If anyone needs an Alfa harness and needs a reference on Lionel's harnesses feel free to contact me.

I would seriously doubt it, but it would be easy to tell just from crawling under the car and looking. All the other lightweights I know of have 4 speed gearboxes, or were converted at a later date to 5 speed 101 gearboxes.
