Hi bjogi

From memory it was about 1493*07300.

I own 1493*05262, a column shift 750B as well as 1493*05880, a floor shift 750B, a friend in the UK owns 1493*05439, a column shift 750B, which he has owned since new.

The early '55's were all column shift, the phasing in of the floor shift was either very late '55 or early '56, Hoffman in the US did not want column shift.

Column shift Sprints were built alongside floor shift Sprints, there was no sequence to them, the column shifts were generally for the European market, while the floor shifts were generally for export - this is not cast in stone.

1493*05262 was originally delivered to John Palmar June in London
1493*05439 was ordered & collected from the Alfa Dealer in France
1493*05880 was shipped to Titan Industrial Corporation in South Africa, who were the import agents in SA.

There are 3 different column shift gearboxes for 750's cars, two for Sprints, both tunnel case gearboxes, both actuated by rod & cable linkage to the shift mechanism at the rear of the tunnel case 750 box, the very early column shift tunnel case has 4 identical synchro's, the later ones have 4 synchro's in 2 different sizes. The third column shift is for the Interim Berlina's which use the split case gearbox, where the shift is actuated by rod linkage throught the bell housing of the split case box. Early 750 berlina's & Spiders also used the column shift tunnel case boxes like the Sprints.

What is the chassis number of your car ?

Ciao
Greig

I am impressed! Thank you very much. The chassis number is 1493.00.349. I have had the car since -69 and I am glad I did not convert it to floor shift. I guess the column shift was popular in Europe (Italy) so you could ride 5 persons in the car!

I am in the middle of dropping the column-shift tunnel case box out of my Berlina as we speak to change the clutch. AR1488*01774*, built 2/13/56

I'll just pop past to pick up the box & bits then ??

Glad you are working on the little car Andrew, she is going to give you a lot of fun, take some pictures & send then to me, especially of all the linkages.

Ciao

Okey doke. Linkage is of course a monkey-motion, but works better than one would have reason to suspect after 52 years of no maintenance. One bushing total gone (where rod coming from bell crank meets shift rod coming out of side of trans), others not bad. Haven't tackled the cable on top yet.

Thus far there's one under-car pic of the trans, and one pic of an out-of-car floor-shift trans, on the Giulietta Berlina Restoration thread.
