Original Top and Carpet Material for Giulia Spider?

What was the original soft top material for a '65 Giulia Spider? Any difference between Normale and Veloce material? How about carpets? Were carpets originally in Normales and Veloces? What was the original carpet material/style?

The top was originally a canvas top IIRC. In the interior the orginal flooring used was a vinyl rolled out and glued to the floor, this was partially covered with rubber mats. They also had strips of wool carpet over the tranny tunnel, drivline tunnel and along the sides where the doors are attached.

I added a interior shot so you can see the carpet strips.

Executive flooring

If I remember correctly (40+ years ago) my interior flooring was exclusively the ribbed rubber matting on my 56/7? spider. Not sure if the top was ever in the 'up' position (So Cal) - know that my 58 MGA top had to be removed from garage when sold - so can only say that it was black with (probably) a scratched plastic window.

There was a complete set of rubber matting in the car. The following image is from the Re-Originals website:

Arno is correct; and, let me add that the pieces that are not numbered are the strips of wool carpet I spoke of.

Underneth the seats and under the driver and passenger side rubber mats would be the glued flooring vinyl. The floorpans had a fibirous jute material as did the tunnels under the carpet.

The flooring vinyl can be seen in the picture (drill resting on it).

I heard from an Alfa expert that the tops on Giulia Veloce Spiders were originally vinyl.

Those were the FIRST replacement tops. The original Alfa canvas one was akin to black tissue paper. They lasted a year or so if up and rotted in a year or so if down.

Did some white Spiders actually come with red carpet strips like the photo above? That livens up the black interior quite a bit!

Yes, I do believe they did. With that said, I would also ask over on the Giuliette 750 101 group.

Yes. It is actually one of the more common interior colors and I think very nice looking with most exterior colors.

In the last few years, carpets with the correct original red have gotten really hard to find from the domestic manufacturers who produce auto carpet sets. At Centerline, we have sourced some Italian made sets in the OE red in both nylon loop and wool. Frankly, I'm blown away by the quality compared to the domestics.

Joe, you're at Centerline? Sorry, but I'm new here and didn't know!

But yes, the red is truly impressive! I'll be sure to place an order for these when I get closer to putting the interior together.

Hi,
Everyone seems to have covered the floors very well. I have a VERY late '65 Giulia 1600 Veloce. The factory top was canvas. I bought the car new in '66 and have saved the orig. soft top for a future pattern. Meanwhile, I also bought a NOS top from PF's tailor in Italy. The material is the same as the factory top though it is reinforced a little better in wear areas. The NOS top came without the black velvet like material flap that lays on the rear panel to prevent reflection in the vinal window. I made that from my pattern. Gordon Raymond

Hey Joe, is that red carpet also available for the early Duettos?

Gordon
It's not often that one sees mention of the velvet flap as originally installed.
They were seldom used as designed and apparently were the first thing discarded when the soft-tops were replaced. Few exist today.
I've got one that has shrunk and is distorted; could you post accurate dimensions of yours?

Hi Alfista Sapien,
Pleased to be of help. The velvet flap is 29-1/2 " X 8" X 1/2" thick. It was made by folding the velvet in half, the round edge toward the front of the car.
The edge (8") seam is on the inside, like a pillow case. The back edge is sewn between the welt and top. On the front corners are black leather fasteners sewn from the corners, 2" long by 3/4" wide. There is a chromed snap head at the end of the fasteners that attaches to a male snap on the chrome rear deck surround. The material was black velvet that turned a bluish green with age. There is no filler material between the two layers of velvet. I Hope this helps you. Best, Gordon Raymond
