Montecatini Rosso anyone?
An interesting finding in the ongoing pursuit of the elusive "correct" Alfa Red. In trying to find the correct "rosso", I consulted various charts on the web, all seeming to stem from Willie R.'s chart, which shows about 20 different reds used by Alfa over the years. Having owned a 65 Giulia Spider Veloce in 1969, I had a pretty good idea of what the correct red was. When I bought my present 65 Veloce, the color seemed too dark to me. I found that it was a red used for 80's and 90's vintage Spiders and had too much blue in it. I recalled that orangy red that my original Alfa was and that was not faithfully captured in photographs.
When I asked Gordon Raymond about his unmolested original Veloce 390778, he said it still had the paint sticker in the trunk.
I also spoke to John Baker in Arizona who sold his Veloce, 390287, in 2006. He still had a photo of the paint sticker in his trunk.
Both were Rosso Montecatini, though the charts show that this color was not used until 1966. Now the task of getting a good match to Gordon's color and duplicating it in today's paint materials.

Maybe Gordon could loan you his glovebox compartment door for a couple of weeks? If not, the trunk cover!

I have always referred to this colour as Peninfarina red. A more orangy/red tone but rather less glaringly orange than in Gordon's photograph. In the catalogues Bertone designed car appear to be painted in "Alfa red" which I think is 501 or similar. John Baker's colour appears to a bluer shade along the lines of 501, or is this just the photograph. I have also come across the colour "light red" for spiders....perhpas this is the Peninfarina colour which is Rosso Montecatini. Odd about the date though!

Unfortunately, I can't help you with exact colors for your '65, but I had that exact sticker in my 67 Duetto. I did quite a bit of research back then when picking a color for repaint, and if I remember correctly, never got a conclusive answer. Montecatini is also referred to as Rosso Farina. I have had sources say that this is the same color as AR514, and that's what I went with...looks like an exact match to the color that was on my Spider originally. So this may help you if you decide to go with Montecatini. According to Willie's site, AR514 is Rosso Semaforo, used from 75-85, but my experience is different.

In my list, I have an entry for Rosso Montecatini that appears as AR-504 (not 514) with DuPont code C-9068, which seems to correspond to VW-AUDI "Marsrot" (Mars red). The information seems to have come originally from paint formulas on Glasurit's web site.
Montecatini Red is still listed on the Glasurit Web Site under Glasurit Lines 22 and 55: Select "Alfa Romeo" in the "Manufacturer" drop-down box, wait until the screen refreshes, then select "Montecatini Red" from the "Color Name" drop-down box. Click on "Start Search", then double click on the line that appears with Montecatini Red (note the 1967-1968 date range). At the bottom left corner, Glasurit Line 22 and 55 will appear. Click on either one of these to lines, and a line in the bottom right box appears. Click on the "Standard" line that appears and you will be shown the formula.
BTW, my list also contains an AR-504 named Rosso Matador for 1960 with Ditzler/PPG code 74229, and an AR-504 named Azzuro Spazio (Space Blue) used between 1968 and 1988 with Ditzler/PPG code 13941 and DuPont code 8869. For AR-514, used between 1963-1985, I have a cross-reference to AR-304, and names like Rosso Italia P.F., Farina Red and Signal Red, with Ditzler/PPG code 72051 and DuPont code 8770. I have no references that would link Rosso Montecatini to any other colors.
Hope this helps,

I've seen the AR504 reference as well in Willie's list, but I have not actually seen that color. AR514 indeed has the same cross reference to Rosso Farina as the Montecatini has. I have also heard it being referred to as Rosso Italia

Deja Vu
750/101 Giuliettas, Giulias and Duetto's and many other model ALFAs up till the early 1970's were painted with Montecatini brand, DUCO formula - nitrocellulose lacquer. DUCO was a DuPont product commonly used as an automotive finish since the 1920's. DUCO was the type or formula name; just as Centari or Imron is used today.
Montecatini was an Italian paint manufacturer in which DuPont had an interest. It was also conveniently located in Milan.
There is no "Rosso Montecatini". Just as there is no "Red Glasurit" or "Red Ditzler".
The color is: Rosso 9068, manufactured by Montecatini, using DUCO nitrocellulose lacquer.

Very interesting! All I could find on Montecatini was that it is a town in Tuscany. So, Montecatini is a paint manufacturer and not a color. Another Alfa mystery. Does anyone have a spray out or sample of that color Rosso 95-C-9068?
Peter, do you have a sample of the color that matched your Duetto?

I can surely get you a small sample of the AR514 that I sprayed with.....it seems to match the red that was in the trunk and under the hood....which I believe to be 9068 because of the paint sticker

I am so sorry, I inadvertently referred to the orangey red as Pininfarina red. It is of course Farina red.

The best way to get an exact match for a precise color is to have it scanned from an actual sample. Paint code is not enough. AR514 has been used so long by Alfa that it covers several hues from various paint manufacturers.

I had some touch up paint made at paintscratch.com to match Montecantini Rosso.
I used a Ditzler code 71844D which I received from Mike (Sprintgtc on BB). It matched perfectly.
You may still be able to order it from the website. The "part number" was:
SS-Montecantini Rosso DDL 71844D

Montecatini
Just to lend more credence to GTD's reply, I found this photo of a paint sticker that says Montecatini brand, but it is for a gray (Grigio) paint code. Paintscratch.com has a formula for the Rosso and they are adding it to their site. I'll order it when they do and see if it's the color I'm looking for.
