Up a creek without a spring...
Hi All,
I just got back my order from the cad platers and I am missing a spring. I called the shop and sent over a picture of it. "So sorry, we tried out best to find it." Bummer.
So, I am in need of an obscure spring. The one that goes on the passenger side seat adjust handle.
Here is a picture. I would be super grateful if someone out there has one of these in their parts bin. I don't know what the going rate on something like this would be, but I am happy to be fair.
Thanks
Jon (sweating bullets)

Probably, but what can I realistically do to them? I might be able to demand some of my money back, but that still doesn't get me a spring....

Very true. Hell, I would make them pay anyway lol.
Is there a way you can make a different spring work to serve that purpose?
Man that sucks, I am sorry to hear someone elses lack of responsibility leads to your lack of a vital spring.

Well, I am open to other options. How to adapt another spring isn't obvious to me at this point.

There are spring-making tools. Jaan Hjorth (go to www.eddinsmoto.com) here in Berkeley has one, which he has used to make shifter springs for Lancias.

Check out Precision Spring Manufacturer - Century Spring Corp. they probably have a torsion sprint that you could modify. I have the paper catalog on my desk here at work if you want to PM me the dimensions of the spring that was lost. I would need ID, OD, wire size, leg lengths required at each end to match the existing spring and winding direction -look down the hole in the center, hold the spring so the point where the wire straightens out is at 12 o'clock. Is it heading off to the left or right?

Oh, and I need the angle between the exiting legs.

If it's a standard seat track spring, I would think someone would have a spare/scrap seat around that might be a donor?

Alright. I'll work on getting the measurements. There is a right and a left hand spring, so I will need to measure the one that I have, and reason out what the angles and directions would be on the other side.
That will need to be done during the day when I am not tired!
The other obvious thing to do is buy an entire passenger side seat rail. Preferably one that is thrashed, but the spring is still there. One may pop up on ebay after a while, too.

'58 giulietta spider normale. Normale doesn't make any difference. I doubt that there is a difference between the 750 and 101. I think that I have read that there is a difference between spider and sprint rails, but that may have no impact on the springs. I am missing the passenger side spring.

Make Your Own
There is no reason you can't fabricate your own springs I needed some for the seat cushion. So, I took a good one down to the hardware store and found one that felt like it had similar tension. I cut one out with the same number of coils and bent the ends.

Those look awesome!
A bit of complication here is that one of the springs is clockwise, the other is counter clockwise. I need to check which one I have when I get home. If I need the non-standard direction, then that could be trouble.
There also needs to be a straight length at each end. I was actually trying to just slightly bend the end of a spring last night (different project). Those buggers are stiff! Maybe you could also give some tips on bending springs....

Jon,
Good luck finding the parts. I went through the same thing looking for seat pans AND seat rails. I ended up making some of the rails myself because I tried for months to find parts to no avail. I looked world wide. Bill Gillham told me he won't even buy a Giulietta without seats and rails. I do have one extra spring but I am afraid to let it go in case I need a spare in the future.
