battaini jack rebuild

In the interest of cleaning up and restoring my jack, I extended it all the way until the shaft came out of the tube. I wasn't expecting a whole bunch of ball bearings to come out, too, but they did. Was this a bad thing? How do they do go back and where?

Any advice or sympathy would be appreciated....

Jack

Rather than risk the safety of a rebuild of the old jack. I've got an extra that I got a few years ago. I can send you a photo in a few days if you like. (I"M out of town until Sunday) then send it to you for $10.00 plus shipping if you are interested.
Regards,
Ray Kiszely

Battaini balls

Sure, kick a guy while he's down!! It's not easy for a guy my age to get down on the garage floor to pick up all those wayward ball bearings. I know you're a little closer to the ground than I am, but come on! How about some constructive help here.....

Cool The probable soultion

You know, Terry, I have never had that happen! (yet). I did discover that the half shafts on Ferrari 275 GTB's are not just splined to change length. They have jillions of ball bearings in half round splines that fly ALL OVER when one pulls them apart! LOTS of fun to reassemble! (Don't ask about the jillion of pins in the steering column lock! {same car})
I wonder if the screw thread is like a recirculating ball type steering box? What kind of thread unscrewed? Was it a single lead or multiple lead thread? I suspect the balls go in the thread IF is is a half round thread. DID you find ALL your balls? You can stick them back in the thread with a thick assembly grease as you start threading it back together.
Like the Ferrari half shafts, let this be a lesson! Don't do that again! Best! Gordon Raymond
