Another 750 Spider Restoration
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum so I thought I'd share some details on my little project.
My grandpa bought this 1957 Giulietta 750 Spider in the 80s. It came with a 1750 Webber twin carb engine, probably from a GTV, Berlina or another Spider.
The sills were pretty rusted so he decided to do a complete rebuild. He welded in new sills and started the restoration.
It's been a slow project that he'd done over the years, but poor health has meant he can no longer continue grotting around under cars.
I've now taken brought the car up to Newcastle (in the North East of England) to put the final touches to it. My main focus recently has been rewiring the whole thing. My grandpa had bought a complete loom from Alfastop, so I set about fitting it.
I'm a real novice to this, so I'm sure you'll hear a lot more from me...probably stressing out about something trivial!!!

Hi all,
A couple of quick questions for the combined brain power of the board!
1/ I seem to have a bit missing for my boot-lock mechanism. Can anyone tell me what it is I need? I'm assuming it's some sort of arm that pulls the wire and pops the catch. Any pics would really help.
2/ What order do the switches go on the dash? Looking at the wiring diagram in the Giulietta Shop Manual from left to right they are: instrument panel lights; headlamps and parking lights; windscreen wipers; motor heater. Does that sound about right? Although there is the waterjet pump to think about too.
3/ Does anyone have any advice on changing the windscreen? Mine has a massive crack. I have a replacement glass but I wouldn't want to crack that one either!
Any advice is always appreciated!

Tom. correct order of the switches left to right are as follows:
FRONT OF DASH
1) Easy Starting Control (choke)
2) Accelerator knob
3) Headlamp on-off switch
4) Air conditioning fan control (heater fan)
BELOW THE DASH
1) Dashboard lighting switch (toggle switch)
2) Windscreen wiper switch
I don't have a waterjet on my '60 so I can't help you there. Disregard the extra toggle switch. They are only reference photos and not from my car.

I can help you with # 3 question, the windscreen. You don´t need to worry, you won´t crack it unless you drop it to the floor, but have someone to help you, it can be tricky to get it in place with new rubbers. I used a lot of duck tape to hold it in place on the opposite side.

Regarding replacement of the glass in the windscreen, it can actually be a serious pain. As Dennis noted, just reinstalling the assembled windscreen on the car is not difficult -- but I think you were interested in replacing a cracked glass and then reinstalling. When you do the job, be sure to replace ALL the rubber seals (you wont want to do the job twice -- trust me  ). The only really difficult part is seating the side posts (with new seals already installed in the side posts). Even with the seals lubed with soapy water, it is not easy to get them on to the glass. Plus, you will need to install the top chrome strip last, while avoiding dislodging the side posts. I would suggest that at least three sets of hands are required -- and NO beers till the job is done.

A couple of years ago I helped a good friend install the windshield on his beautifully restored 61 Spider. We were very methodical through the whole process, taking our time and care. I happened to be the one that ran the nuts down on the studs in the cowl. I thought I stopped at what felt just firm. The next morning, Mr. Rosenburger fould the glass was cracked. What did I do wrong?

Cheers for all the info chaps.
George - thanks for the pics. I can finish off the dash no worries now. As for the assembly in the boot (sorry, trunk in your world), do you know where I could get one? It's not something alfa stop or classic alfa do individually.
Dennis/ Jim - cheers for the info on the windscreen. I'll remove the cracked screen and use it as a learning experience! I might need to recruit some experts to help me with the fitting of the new glass.
I'll keep you posted on progress!

Assuming that the new glass had no flaws at all, the crack probably came from an unevenly applied stress. One guess would be that the side posts (chromed vertical elements that carry most of the load of the windshield) might have been tightened down too much before tightening the cowl studs. If so, the glass might have been stressed unevenly when pulling down on the studs. The reverse situation (tighten cowl studs completely first, then side posts last) might have the same effect. When I installed the windshield on my Spider, I had no problems with cracking (and none appeared in the past 8 years or so). But I'm pretty sure I installed ALL the nuts on the posts and studs before a final tightening. It might also help to start the final tightening of the nuts at the center cowl stud, then working out to the side posts while alternating sides. Like torquing down a cylinder head, you want to keep the stress uniform across the surface in order to avoid stress concentrations that result in warpage / damage. Just my two lira, your mileage may vary.

Tom - They are occasionally available on e-Bay; I believe Re-Originals $ell$ them.

Rear dumb-irons
Hi all,
Can anyone confirm that there is only two dumb-irons at the rear of a Spider?
Not four like there is at the front?
I've found this picture of Pat's beauty and I'm assuming that's correct. Mine only has one on the right so I'll have to find one for the left.

Regarding "dumb irons"; you are correct in that there are two toward the rear. There are also alloy spacers, one right and left, for securing the rear bumpers at their forward end.

Referring to the attached diagram:
Bracket 1495.62.002 bolts to the dumb iron, then bumper bolts to the bracket.
Alloy spacer 101.03.59.245.00 w/rubber gasket gets a single thru-bolt at forward end of bumper.
