Sorry for above. I hit the wrong button when distracted.
I`m disappointed in missing out on a car that is very rare in NZ and I can`t recall in my 25 yrs or so of having anything to do with Alfas of a 750 or 101 coupe being offered for sale so it was an opportunity but to me in its current condition it only had a certain value as is.
The chap who owns it is an eccentric, a retired architect ,an 80yr old with a pony tail who`s first love is really the old Lancias he has on his property- old Appias, Flavias, Flaminias, Fulvias. Unfortunately he drove them, got another so just left the car he was driving and drove the new acquisition, then did the same again with the next. That`s what happened to the Sprint which was last driven in 1985. The vehicles have never been preserved or maintained although some have been stuck in sheds on the property but most are in similar condition to the Sprint. He has suffered a head injury which unfortunately has left him with a condition with symptoms similar to alzheimers hence the wife deciding now is the time to move off the 5 acre farmlet to a townhouse but about 25 cars have to go. Only trouble is their perception of value and not being a practical chap he has no idea of the work and cost of restoring or even of getting into a roadworthy condition any of these cars in his possession-so frustrating.

Keep working on her, they will sell, but don't walk away - they "have" to sell, & if you don't keep at it, they will sell or worse, give it away to the next person who expresses interest.
Keep phoning - it helps to chase things you want, that's how a friend managed to buy a '58 Sprint Veloce which was *not for sale*
They've got to shift the stuff, so what have you got to loose ??
Ciao

I agree with Greig - check back once a month, with the wife!
An alternative might be to find another car in his sad collection and offer to take both away, for very little additional money (say, USD 1,000) ... this might get the wife to side with you even more, and conclude the sale(s).
Good luck, we haven't given up on the Sprint either yet!

Closer to the time, go back & while talking to the wife, show her the $3000-00 in notes, as they say, "Cash is King".
Pat has an interesting point, they have to get rid of the stuff, so maybe offer to take 2 cars & then flog the second one - pick something that is relatively easy to get rid of...

Old Lancias and coachbuilt old Fiat cabrios are not that easy to get rid of in NZ and that is what the rest of the cars are-wouldn`t mind his Flavia Vignale convertable myself or even one of the little Appia Berlinas, or the Flaminia 3C (Touring bodied) coupe.
Alas too little money, time and space.
