Hi, thanks. I used Hammerite silver. It is my understanding Hammerite was used on the Veloces. It give a nice slightly textured finish.

Cheers,

George

George,

Is it your understanding that they used the Hammerite finish for '59 Veloces as well? I have heard both silver and black textures were used and still don't know what to do for mine.

Is hammerite a paint or process?

Thanks for posting all the great information and photos!

Tom, I don't know which years were painted what but I think it is a good bet '59 would be included. But what I have learned is the dealers painted some black wrinkle finish (to match what Ferrari was doing?). My friend and respected Alfa restorer Bill Gillham informed me that the Veloces were Hammerite. Sounded like he meant all Veloces were.

Hammerite is a paint finish manufactured by many rattle can paint companies. Hammerite is also a paint brand, but they all seem to work well. I also like the silver finish because I have so much black already.

Cheers,

George

George...you're putting us to shame!....your car is looking like a jewel! Could I ask about the Hammerite paint....did you apply any primer before hand? or just go straight with the enamel to bare metal?

Thanks.

I used a can primer. Mistake! I have used Hammerite many times before and not used primer but this time I used it, and it chips very easy. I will repaint it this summer when it is warm again; without primer. I think it works better without primer, at least the primer I used.

Cheers,

George

Something to think about I guess. I wonder if that paint system requires that it's own primer system be used as well...or....perhaps an epoxy primer would provide better adhesion to the Aluminum. Another problem might be surface preparation, I'm not a paint expert by any means, so hopefully some else can chime in here and offer some insight....(I'm thinking of going with a painted cover and intake manifold as well).

I didn't paint the intake cover and you might be right about the primer. All I know is in the past I have painted all sorts of metals without primer and had better success. Not to say the adhesion is terrible, but I think it could be improved,

Cheers,

George

I have been told that when painting bare aluminum it is advisable to use self etching primer. I used etch primer in a rattle can after sandblasting my aluminum wheels and have had no problems thus far. Can't say for certain if this will help when using Hammerite.
