In the 1960s and 1970s when FIAT both marketed their cars with Lancia and later Ferrari in the USA, FIAT used 'Spyder' instead of the Alfa Romeo 'Spider' on all of their car lines.

I hold my hands up, I don't know my spider from my spyder but it seems to me from what has been said that my Ferrari is a spyder, but my Alfa is a spider. The Fiat 850 down the road is a spyder as is the rusting Lancia but all the brands are Fiat now so what's correct? Or simply do we spell by brand, in which case I will alter my cars names accordingly.

As with other automotive terms, the term derives from horse-drawn carriages. A "spider" was a lighter version of a phaeton, having narrower, spindly wheels and two-seat accommodation. The name implied an extremely rudimentary top mechanism originating from a small two-seat horse-cart with a folding sunshade made of four bows; with its black cloth top and exposed sides for air circulation it resembled an eight-legged spider. This term was subsequently applied to automobiles.

Alternatively, a native Italian who has had no English influence in the pronunciation would pronounce "spyder" or "spider" as speeder. Thus a car labeled by an Italian car manufacturer as "Spyder" or "Spider" is intended to be simply a "speeder" or a sports car.

There is no "Y" in the Italian alphabet. Maybe that's why it isn't Ytaly!

Hi Marco,
Cams and carb are the main difference, basic engine will be the same. All parts will swop between the 2 engines if needed.

Marco,

The berlina runs a single choke carb, all other models have a twin choke, and the cams are a milder profile for more torque. You can swop the manifold and carb from the original engine to the Berlina engine, also the cams. This will bring it up to Sprint power output. I assume you have these items on your original engine.

Chris

About the question:

"Dear Mister Pestana,

with reference to your request we are informing you as follows.

According to our documentation files, the chassis number AR 1488.13196 and the engine number AR 1315.63166 originally corresponds to an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Berlina Normale, manufactured on the 8th July 1957.

The Giulietta Berlina engine is 53 cv, Sprint 65 cv.

Yours, Sincerely,

Marco Fazio

You want original camshafts (intake and exhaust) for your 1956 Giulietta Sprint 1300cc; correct?
