Laurence, comparing this blue car's chassis number against those in the Sprint register, it's nestled right in between the batch of Confortevoles that we have - is that rear shelf actually the "seat" in Confortevoles? It's also built just a month (or weeks!) before your car, according to the register.

Dear Pathung,
There is no connection between a "rear seat" and a Confortevole. The seat came LATER, and was an early option, but the 1st series car wasn't marketed as a 2+2. There is much discussion of this in the 'Sprinting about' and 'SVZ' threads, but the gist is that a 1st series SV is a SVA or a SVC, depending among other things if its Bertone # is 77*** or 655***A*, indicating race or GT configuration. GreigSA outlined specific differences and Dave Struss' car is the almost twin of mine. Martinue outlined the numbers series in the SVZ thread.
Thank you,
Laurence

Hi Gents
Firstly, Veloce and Normale chassis numbers are not separate, the car above, 1493 06329 was built as a Normale, there is NO 1493E 06329, the chassis number was allocated to the blue car above. The E in a Veloce chassis number stands for Elaborata, or elaborate - do I need to elaborate ?
The Normales were NEVER known as Confortevole's, this was the name given to the 199 Sprint Veloce's built from Chassis 1493E05834 to 1493E06611.
The Sprint Veloce Confortevole's were built directly after the Sprint Veloce Lightweights, (the Lightweights were / are sometimes referred to as Allegerita's). As per Laurence, the Bertone body Number on a Lightweight begins with 77####, while the Confortevole's begin with 65#### just the same as the Normale's, BUT the Confortevole ends with *A* - thus 65###*A* denotes a Confortevole.
Production of the true Lightweight Veloce's ended in late '57, these were the cars with aluminium panels, sliding plexi-glass windows, etc. Immediately after this, production started of the Sprint Veloce Confortevole's, with all steel panels & glass wind-up windows, (framed on the first 50 Confortevole's with an alloy frame much like those on the Lightweight Veloce's).
Both are true 750 Veloce's, but the Confortevole or Comfortable version is more 'civilised' due to having a more luxurious interior & at least the steel doors don't transfer the heater output into the atmosphere during winter..... or dent as easily. The reason Alfa wound down the production of the Lightweight, was that the SS was first conceived in '57, and was to be the new Factory Race Car, (although no-one realised then, that it would ultimately be a Grand Tourer rather than a racer). The Veloce range was rationalised to have more panel commonality with the Normale to reduce both cost & complexity in production.
The Confortevole's were built in 2 distinct production runs, the first 50 with framed windows started at 1493E05834 and ended at 1493E06257, with a gap before the next 149 cars started at 1493E06458 and ended at 1493E06611.
Laurence & Dave have cars from the second run, without framed windows, while I have a car from the first run with framed windows. I have traced 7 of the first 50 cars thus far. If you want the spreadsheet of Confortevole's contact me off line, or wait till the next edition of the Giuliettaletta.
The back seat option........... this was an option, across the board, for both Normale & Veloce, if you had the money, you could order a variety of options, from the rear seat, leather upholstery, alloy trim on the grille bars, dummy knock-off hubcaps, 1/4 vent windows, (yes, on a Sprint !!), fitted luggage, special fitted fog / driving lamps, with trim colour coded to your car by Chassis number, etc, etc The problem with these options, was cost, they were expensive & Sprints, were never "cheap" cars, hence most buyers were stretched to afford the basic car, never mind any additional on-costs for accessories.
lastly, a rear seat, does NOT a Confortevole make. Mine does not have it, neither do any of the other 6 early Confortevole's.
Hopefully this clarifies a few questions - feel free to contact me off-line for any further info.
Ciao

Greig,
Slightly off topic, but does the above mean that this car may have been optioned with quarter windows rather than imaginatively restored?

Quarter vents on Sprints
Hi Matt
Yes, it was built like that, Alfa listed 1/4 vent windows for Sprints as an option, but they had to be specified by the buyer / Dealer while the vehicle was still in production as they could not be fitted after the time. If they offered them for Sprints, they would have obliged if a customer had wanted them on an SS. They provided an alternative type of ventilation which certain customers preferred.
The attached picture shows the Bertone Cabriolet Prototype - a one-off built by Bertone from a standard 750 Sprint, but with 1/4 vent windows - note the knock-off wheels.
The Sprint behind shows 1/4 vent windows & the Sprint in the foreground shows the optional driving lights which could be fitted in the air collectors - to do this, the grille bars needed to be modified, Alfa would supply a complete kit to do the swap, based on the Chassis number of the car.
Of course all of this came at a price......
Ciao
Greig
p.s - the Bertone Cabrio still exists, it is owned by a Swiss Alfista and shares a garage with La Goccia, the Michelotti bodied Sprint Veloce
