Hi,
I am heading down this road, and I am hoping to cure this problem before it starts. Can you send me the contact information for Max?
I would also be interested in the Alfisti commenting on the various solutions that people have come up with on this.
Cheers!
Jon

Some may recall that on the Saturday morning of the Monte Shelton Rally that with 49 F overnight on the Oregon Coast there was a starting problem.
Battery was good, and the 1600 starter had been rebuilt, but it could not turn the 2 L over quickly enough to fire. A start with about five pushers was required until someone noticed that the hand brake was on --a little. Pictures were circulated.
The new starter required some machining of the outer case to clear something down there, and some flat-head bolts rather than the allen head.
Although rebuilt, the 1600 starter was getting almost hopeless--even at 60 F. The new one spins over real fast, and starts the engine instantly.

There is one currently on E-Bay. I'll see if I can find it again and send you the link.

Trip Report
Enjoyed a v. nice tour of the southern interior of B C.
Accomplished 900 miles with the cruising done at 80 mph. There were a lot of good twisties that required some hard braking. That was going up and then coming down.
A week ago Friday drove from Vancouver to Sun Peaks, which is a Ski resort. It was raining on Saturday morning so I didn't rent a D H bike.
The drive out to Shuswap Lake took us into a rainstorm--so heavy that it forced 3 stops--couldn't see a thing.
Weather was good at Silver Star and I got in 3 hours on a full-travel downhill bike. The rental required a full-face helmet. Perhaps appearance was part of the reasoning. No point in scaring the locals.
The high temps in the valleys were in the 90s, which was not uncomfortable when moving.
The low coming over the last pass was 56 with no rain.
No probs--lots of fun.
Looking forward to our Italian Car Club Wine Tour later in September.

Alloy Wheels Update
I received a direct inquiry and thought I'd update the thread.
The wheels look great and when I bought the car the old tires had a coefficiant of friction that was approaching zero. Knowing 175/65/15 would fit without interfering I put them on.
However, they are 24 inches in dia.--originals are 24.5 so the fender arches look "empty".
Some 185/65/15 tires installed on 4.5-inch wide wheels don't interfere with the front suspension. However on 5-inch wide wheels they do.
Spacers on the fronts are needed and I've ordered a set of wheel bolts that are 60 mm long in the shaft. In RH and LH threads. These will eliminate comments about so many threads being un engaged.
I have new Konis and bushings for the sway bar and hopefully this will be soon installed.
Sprints have longer wheel bolts and the 175/65/15 tires on the 5-inch alloy wheel fit without interfering --I'm told.

Looks like you swapped out your '74's 2-liter for a 1750, Guido? I'd never heard of that done till now.

Torque!
Alfar7 does 2 L heads and this is the way the conversation went:
"Can you get 162 lbsft at around 4800 out of that old hemi head?"
"Sure, but why that precise number?"
"The Honda S 2000 vtec engine puts out 162 torque at 6800 rpm and the car weighs almost 3000 pounds."
"I see where you are going."
In order to diminish an uprising by offended purists, this part of the country has a number of long mountain grades and lots of torque prevents old Alfas from being "moving chicanes".
The head will be sent to Richard this winter

Shocks
The old ones were KYB gas and looked like they had been in the car for some time, but were not hopeless. However, early in the summer and on cold mornings the front right would do a "clunk". Then during the warmer weather it didn't do it.
Sure prompted getting the new Koni Reds and they were installed last week. Set at one notch above soft.
The immediate impression is that they are more compliant over the small ripples and very good when damping down a larger displacement such as over my most unfavorite speed bumps.
Haven't had too much time on the twisties, but there seems to be rather a quick turn in. Fronts could be too soft.

Springs
Been looking into spring rates.
Chris Robinson advises that original fronts are 275 lbs/inch.
Higher performance kits from C/L, Dave Rugh, and Chris are around 550/inch.
Comes with a one-inch sway-bar. Stock is 17 mm.
Going to see about finding some at around 400 lbs/inch.

Some Winter Work
Took Giulietta over to Paul who will ship the head to Alfar7 for some improvements and torquey cams.
The list includes re-chroming the front bumpers, hood and trunk hinges, as well as an electric rad fan.
