Gordon

Thanks for the advice. The plates in the 4.1 lsd that I now have are in good shape, so it is down to doing the install.

In the meantime, I've ordered the oval hose, air filter and clamps from Matt at Reoriginals.

The clamps will be coming to him from Europe.

LSD Conversion

If you are doing a 115/101 transplant I do suggest that for street use that a 2 plate clutch assembly (stock) is totally adequate. From experience a 4 disk LSD on the street can be scarey particularly in the wet.
I just did the same conversion, but since this thing is supposedly a track car I set it up with 4 LSD clutches.
I also build a modified 115 LSD that fits the smaller ring gears & housing widths of the 101/105`s center housings so that the orig center sections can be used along with the optional 5.12, 5.38 Etc. ring gears. Pics of my conversion are below.
Good luck

Do race rules over there require that the axle tube is vented through some kind of vapour separator??

Lovely work, btw, Richard.

Alex.

Thumbs up RJ spider rear axle photo

Richard likes to show off with that bottom picture. He knows it's my favorite. He has a secret stash of little Italian Elves (and Elvises) working in his shop. This type of work then mysteriously appears, to make those of us with plain 'ol Alfa live axles feel bad. Please notice that EVERYTHING in his photo is ADJUSTABLE! WoW!

Alex, they do but most just run a tube into the top of some Eyetalian brand olive oil can. Same for the oil catch can, even though it`s supposed to have a breather on it. Not that I haven`t done it! (2nd pic) Gouldn`t find a proper Girling brake fluid container so I used a modern version. Not as elegant through. Anyone have a spare & bracket they want to though at the project?

Richard

Thanks for the info--I was in England from June 5 to 14, and while there enjoyed dinner at AlfaZagato's on a v. nice Friday evening.

My Spider is running well enough for summer fun. The front 3-shoes are in pretty good adjustment and the new Conti Pros feel and look good. 175/65/15 on Fergat wheels. Haven't had a chance to try them in the wet.

Clearance is good as some fairly aggressive driving on humpy-bumpy twisties with fresh stock springs, shocks, and ride height produced no body rub at all.

Come the Winter shut down, it seems like a good idea to go to modern light-weight disc brakes at both ends. The 2 L rear axle with the 4.1 diff has yet to be installed.

The 2 L has enough torque that I dont need to use first other than when starting on a hill. The tuning is not completed and the end result will be a nice quick driver.

Very Hot On The Driver's Floor

The 2 L headers come close to the aluminium casting that holds the clutch and brake peddles. Also, the collector throws a lot of heat as well. Even though they had been COATED.

Even on the cooler days this made the driver's floor rather hot.

There had been some shielding on the casting, but it was long gone and Andy fabbed a replacement as well as some shielding placed above the collector.

Then on Sunday morning I attended to the inside. There was v. little by way of floor insulation put in when the car was built, so I installed a layer of shiny reflective stuff followed by some closed-cell insulating matt(5mil thick).

This is much better, but will require a little more work at the peddle housing. With the black rubber floor matts back in--nothing shows.

The air intake is now complete.

A Centerline cast aluminium box for the 2 L has been on the carbs for a few months, along with the crossover plenum from a 105. The CL one is for a Giulietta Veloce filter canister that mounts to the firewall.

The 2 L is too tall for this, but the can from a Giulia Spider Normale that mounts above the steering column fits. Got one from Jonathan in California. Originally this had two crossover pipes and Bill Gillham modified it to take the single oval crossover.

This included a snorkus sticking forward to near the rad, but we decided to shorten it to include an air hose as on the Giulia Veloce. The hose from Centerline although looking original was fairly stiff and to get the twists to line up an oval hole was cut through the inner engine bay wall. Veloces have a round hole.

The 1600 Veloce hose connects to the top of the intake scoop assembly at the grill, so the thinking was to replicate this, but the scoop is welded in. It was impossible to install a vertical connector pipe to replicate the original set up.

However there is a factory cut hole in the horizantal metal above that was there prolly for the Veloce intake in its Giulietta form. A cover was tacked in when the car was built. It came out easily--thanks Luigi wherever you are--.

A short up pipe was welded in to securely accept the intake hose, for all that fresh air.

With the oval flex hose connecting the plenum to the can some of the "rap" from the open plenum which was very audible is somewhat quieter.

Looks good and feels good.

On Monday new slave cylinders and linings will be installed in the 3-shoe front brakes, and on Thursday we will be off the the Monte Sheldon Rally, for vintage cars. This year it starts in Portland and runs out to the coast.

Nice looking giulietta up in Vancover, too bad you you have to keep the top up most of the time though. I did not think there was enough room for the plenum in a giulietta with the taller 1750/2000 engine with the centerline mounts. If anyone has had success doing this I would be very interested. I plan on going with the mini filters that steve sells on my webers for now.

Shakedown Trip

With considerable effort the 3-leading shoe brakes were sorted out on Wednesday.

We left early Thursday for Portland to participate in the 19th Annual Monte Shelton NW Classic Motorcar Rally.

This started on Friday morning and ended at The Inn at Otter Crest on a cliff at the Oregon coast.

Never having rallied before we were soon off course but had been advised that the lunch spot was at Tillimook on the coast. The roads were terrific, with good paving and some of the best twisties I've driven when not on a track, few other cars and no cops. Even a few miles of gravel.

With two up and enough luggage for a 6-day trip the Spider was loaded, but never bottomed out or rubbed the tires on the body--despite aggressive driving through some humpy-bumpy turns. New Continental Pros 175/65/15 on Fergat wheels.

There were 56 entrants that included a 1939 Bentley, a 54 Lancia Aurelia GT, a 62 Ferrari 250 Sprint GTE, pluss Porsche, Morgan, Healeys, Triumphs, MGs and Alfas.

By the afternoon of the second day Lois got into the navigating such that we did not score at the bottom of the list.

The event was very well run and a lot of fun. We will participate next year- maybe even figure out the time and average speed part.

It rained a little on Sunday-enough to put the top up- but by the time we got to Cannon Beach the weather cleared such that only an hour or so was not driven with the roof down.

Stayed at Port Townsend on Monday night, and got back to Vancouver on Tuesday evening, after a pleasant dinner at the Oyster Bar on Chukanut Drive south of Bellingham.

Prolly did a thousand miles, with a lot at 70 mph as well as up to 100 during the rally.

No problems.

Subtle,

I like how your "navigator" left the parking brake on, while the men shoved and heaved trying to get your car to bump-start!

Here's the link (scroll down to pictures of many people pushing a little grey Giulietta to no avail):

Thumbs up Well.... lets push it!

Patrick, Subtle,
This is GREAT. Since I know both of you, I guess I can admit this has happened to me. When my Ausca spider was in its full race trim, with it's 5:12 locked rear axle, I needed to push it around a corner to the trailer. Got part way there and as I tried to turn the steering wheel, more and more help arrived. When the help realized the Goodyear Blue Streak's were making a mess of the hot asphalt, they finally picked up the rear end and carried it onto the trailer! What a laugh! Had the same thing happen with my 275GTB Ferrari at a vintage race, where one of the gear bushings in the transaxle slipped out of the gear, locking it between 1st and reverse. That one was so un-pushable, we finally got a floor jack to get it off the track. ( I got myself into this situation when I spun the car in a hairpin, and TOO quickly selected reverse to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. Very embarassing + I had to fix it!) Best, Gordon Raymond
