Thumbs up Air cleaner

Hi Subtle,
The very best (most beautiful as well ) comes from Christian Ondrak at OK parts in Germany. Tell him I sent you, it "might' help with the rest. His assembly is STAINLESS STEEL! This avoids the problem with the OEM units of internal rusting caused by picking up moisture or (heaven forbid) rain from the grille intake. The OEM units, when found, are almost always rusty inside. They can be cleaned up chemically and treated internally with a rust proofer, but you will have a lot of time and money in that. Engines that ingest rust are not happy engines ! The largest problem with Christian's is IT COSTS A LOT!!
I have suggested these to a number of owners, as they are an excellent copy, will last forever, and unpainted, the polished stainless is stunning ! I have not found other replicas in plain, rustable, steel, they probably would not cost a whole lot less, due to the complexity of the unit . One advantage of using the OEM style air cleaner is that it shields, to some extent, the header heat that ruins the hand brake cable . They still get cooked in time, but it takes longer. Christian also stocks the upper, short, cable. I recently bought one from him to replace my cooked one . Quality was excellent.
Christian ships Fed Ex, and parts arrive faster than if you order them from US sources . This is also expensive. I usually buy a lot of stuff and have him ship by a slower route to save on shipping. He will do whatever you wish, and is at the top of my list for foriegn sources. Another GOOD one is Anthony @ sales@fastroadcars.uk. (Weber parts)
Send me a PM if you need more information. Best, Gordon Raymond

Polished Stainless? Now, if I only had a Veloce to pop that in to...

There's an OEM one on eBay as of this morning, if you're still interested.

Pat

Saw the one from Singapore , which is a cold box on the carbs, if that is the one you mean.

That isn't the one I'm looking for.

Talked with Gordon and I'll email Christian.

Thanks

Gordon

Christian only makes a ss cannister for the Giulietta intake.

Is there enough room above the 2 L for it to fit mounted to the firewall?

thanks

Probably not, but quick to E-Bay item #160104338784, is a real, old stock restored one for ONYL a small fortune! Give it a try!
Best, Gordon Raymond.

Tried your number but ebay reports that it doesn't exist.

You still up?

A good week.

The 2 L lsd axle arrived at Specialty Engineering who will do the instal.

Also, Jonathan in N. Cal. passed on his 1600 Normale air can and fittings to a posterity in my Anormale.

This is now on the way to Bill Gillhams for the mod needed to fit it in its new home.

Picked up the Spider from Don's yesterday. Nice sunny day so I drove the half-hour back home and then out to the university with those nice twisties.

The 2 L pulls stongly on the straights and on the section that has some humpy-bumpies there were a few rattles as the exhaust was touching somewhere. This will be adjusted when the post-collecter resonator is installed.
Without this the noise is not as loud as I thought it would be.

The exhaust will be done at the same shop that will install the 4.1 LSD axle.

So far, so good. . A tour, show, with burgers and beer is scheduled with the Healey crowd on May 6.

The Starter

One question has been is would the 1600 starter reliably(repeat, reliably) handle the load of the 2 L with 10.4 cr?

The 2 L starter wont fit this instal, and the old one is barely handling it.

Options included rebuilding the old one, get one from a GTA, get a reduction-geared one, or the "lightweight permanent magnet high output" one from Alfaholics.

The 8-tooth Alfaholics one designed for the mechanical clutch instal will be sent out next week.

The engine was set up to get the car moving.

It pulls with a lot of authority and will do even more when the tuning is finished.

Glad you found a 1600, I got a good price for mine from an Alfa tuning shop In North Vancouver.

Hi Subtle,
The Alfaholics unit is probably the best bet, unless you have a very good starter shop that can make new windings in house. The old GTA unit is, I believe, now unavailable. I do not know if the gear reduction unit will fit in the available space. I'm guessing the Alfaholics unit is, essentially, a replica of the old GTA starter. This will probably be a trial and error adaptation. One reliable source has reported to me that a good 1600 stock unit works fine in his 2L , with >11:1 compression. Lots of opinions on this one! Thanks Gordon

It had to do with the cost of rebuilding the old one and the cost of a superior new one.

Knew of 10.1 cr that had no probs, but decided to upgrade.

I'm getting a good price for the 1600 engine, and have just sold my vintage wood/canvas canoe as well as the white water one so I'm flush for the other sport--so to speak.

On each paddling season the boats seemed to get heavier and the kneeling more painful.

The LSD is being torn down to inspect plates etc..

What split is recommended for street and highway use?

Some suggest around 28 %, others say 50 %.

What is the stock setting?

What are the pros and cons?

Where does one find the clutch plates for the lsd?

Hi Bob,
Jack Beck set up mine. Orion Motorsports near Omaha, Ne. We had the same discussion, and I left it to him. As an ex race car that will see limited track work, Jack felt, too stiff was an invitation to rapid wear and unnecessary stress on the street. They do loosen up with mileage anyhow. Since first installed, I have used Red Line 90 lube as per Jacks suggestion to maintain longivity. Initially the LS was noisier than I expected, but either I am used to it or it has quieted down in about 2,000 miles. I would suggest you talk with Jack. If you can't find a phone#, send me a note and I will send same. Too little LS can = wheelspin in hard corners. Too much, = you will wonder if you need stiffer sway bars front OR rear, & steering effort will increase in even mild turns. You may also hear it whurr, and in extreme cases wonder why it is so hard to launch the car while turning the wheel at stoplights. I previously used a GTA unit, ( this is not a true LS) as it had the same lockup at any speed. It was very difficult on the street, and was the reason I had Jack build me an Alfa LS. Jack can source plates. Gordon Raymond
