Following are Brad Baum's Sprint and Lew Rosenberger's Spider on Hwy. 1 in California... on the way home from the Monterey Weekend, perhaps?

Gordon Raymon's AUSCA Spider
Posting for Gordon Raymond. Following is his description of the car:
"This is the only Giulia AUSCA Spider built by Horst K. & Ron Neal. There are 4 or 5 Duetto's, but all in full race trim.We built this Alfa from the last Giulia sold by Bill Knauz . It is titled as a 1966, and came with a shipment of Duetto's. I bought it new when I was at AUSCA, and Horst set it up with full GTA running gear, maintaining the engines Sn . Autodelta suspension, Minilites, GTA clutch & aluminum flywheel. Close ratio gearset, 4:56 rear end ratio with limited slip. Autodelta front sway bar, Ausca rear sway bar. GTA side exhaust and many other things to numerous to get into.
I've driven it about 40,000 miles in the 40 years I'v owned it. It has been raced, is very competitive, but I'm not. This Alfa is un restored, has about 90 % original paint, with a black factory steel hardtop. It has been seen enough to have had replicas of it made, but none, I believe, with the GTA engine and running gear."

Pat/Gordon,
I'd be interested to know a bit more about the AUSCA spider's carb plate, I cannot quite make out the name of the manufacturer. There seems to be a couple of blocked-off passageways for some reason? What's the purpose of this?
Alex.

Same here. I would also like to see a picture of the front as I have been debating the look of a pair of Lucas Fog lamps. They look very smart from the side.

Not sure if Gordon's reading this thread, but I'll forward your question to him; I'll also see if he has a frontal shot of the car.

Hi Alex,
I am not computer literate enough to get my photos posted without an expert's help. THANKS PAT!
The carb plate was from the time when Alfa engines were used in formula cars. It was called "the ACL unit" and, reasonably, had the letters A C L cast into the plate with a red background. Most were for 40 DCOE's, but Horst located one for 45's with the correct long air horns with backfire screens.
The passageways you mention as blocked off, are actually open float bowl breathers, complete with neat little fine mesh screens to keep crud out. It was a well thought out plate. I have another "ACL unit" for 40 DCOE's with slightly (1/4") shorter air horns. These units were also available with curved air horns, but I believe only for the 40 DCOE's. At the time the engine was built, Ron Neal ran both the straight 45's, and the curved 40 air horns on the AUSCA engine brake and found the straight 45's to deliver more power throughout the engines range, and a little more low end torque. Thanks for your question! Best, Gordon Raymond

This is a 1963 101 Spider. This car was raced on the West Coast at Riverside, Willow Springs and Palm Springs. I found an old 1980's race entry sheet in the glove box, where it raced against Dave Vegher and Mike Sperry (both in GTAs). The roll bar has been removed and now this Spider is out to pasture as a street car.
Current specs:
2 liter engine, ported head with std valves, 11:1 compression, 10mm lift cams with long duration, 45 dcoe carbs with aluminum intake tract extensions (inner fender is cut out), 38mm chokes, vintage aluminum radiator, 1600 water pump pulley, custom exhaust headers, 2.25" diameter stainless steel exhaust, limited slip ZF differential, rear Ate brake calipers, Girling 3 piston front brake calipers, koni shocks, race springs, 26mm front sway bar, 15" x 7" Minilite wheels, 225/50/15 kuhmo tires, vintage aluminum fuel cell, Stewart Warner oil press. and water temp. gages, Jeager tach., no speedometer, chassis tubular stabilizer bar mounted to soft top attachment points.
Rear wheel HP is 127 at 7000 rpm. Next modification might be an 11mm inlet cam for a few extra HP.
Add gas and have fun.

Biscione,
Nice car! Do you have pictures of the engine? What suspension modifications does the car have?

Could you clarify that a bit - Is it the vehicle on the left or right of the pic?
