Wheel color

Hello,

I am a new member who is restoring a 1962 Guilietta SS. I hope somebody can provide me with a paint code pink sample for the silver gray wheels.

Thank you
Sal

Oh boy. You're opening a big can of worms. Do a search for "wheel color", and get ready to sit in front of your computer for a few hours - have that cup of coffee handy. You should also try the Yahoo 750/101 group if you can't get enough of it here. Have fun!

As Patrick has wisely stated, 'do a search'. There is probably more info than you want on wheels and wheel color. Here's a thread that comes to mind:

Powdercoat powder for steel wheel.

If I remember correctly, the last Alfa Owner had an article on this topic. The more respected sources seem to recommend BMW Polaris Silver for 60's era Alfa wheels.

Hello Sal, I got a reply from Intera in Stockholm regarding the paint code. The told me that they make the color mixture them self and couldn’t give me any useful paint code, Sorry!
Regards,
Joakim

Joakim, I noticed that the wheel with the exposed hub doesn't have hubcap clips. Did you remove them prior to painting?

Hello! Yes, I removed the clips before painting. As new set will be added soon.

Polaris silver BMW works fine, so does Porsche "Silber",, and Mercedes Astral silver. I have looked at the tinting guide for all of these colors, and they are basically all the same. These silver paints are almost entirely made up of just a very fine ground aluminum and almost nothing else is in there. Be careful when using PPG or Dupont paints though, as their silvers tend to have a coarser grain to them than the euro paint formulas like Sikkens, Glasurit, or Spies Heckor, and can have too much "sparkle" in the metallic. The original wheel silver was a very fine ground metal flake and you can hardly even see the metallic in there.

I have had good luck with Polaris Imola, a BMW color. I have done three sets of wheels, 2 alloy and one steel with an epoxy version of this color and have been very satisfied.

Go to the Glasurit web site, enter "BMW" for the "Manufacturer", then select "Polaris Imola Silber" in the "Color Name" drop-down box and click the "Start Search" button. This shows you that the paint code exists. Then, try to order or find a company who can sell you the paint through the US distributor www.basfrefinish.com.

Paints Plus is a shop I buy mail order from, and they sell Spies Heckor German paint. Their silvers are very nice, and gp on and cover better than any I have used. They have that Polaris paint code available. Their number is 800-472-4551. Ask for Gino or Bob and tell them Andy Schank sent you. You will need the paint and the reducer.

101 wheel paint

Sal,
There was a long and endless discussion on this subject on 750-101 forum many times over and the overwhelming concession was the BMW Polaris Silver was the closiest match.

I found the Glasurit codes for the silver. Should I use a gloss or satin clear on top? thoughts?

thanks,
Steve
