Pat

On my Spider the 2 L exhaust pipes run v. close to the floor.

Had an aluminum heat shield crammed in. Then with the HushMat I placed a small piece on top of the shield and left it for a month of driving.

No probs, so I covered it with the stuff and it can take the heat--helps the shielding as well as damps out some noise.

On the latter, try putting some inside a door panel and then tap it to compare with the other door. Then tap along various parts of the body to see which parts need damping.

The improvement is a "night and day" difference. I used about ten lbs of it, and, for example, be sure to place it on the inner surface of the doors, not the outside --don't want to upset the puritans.

Subtle,

The plan is to use it on every interior surface of the car that will be covered up either by carpet or floormat, including the firewall and behind the seats where the spare wheel resides. These will also be installed inside the quarter panels and doors - the Puritans will never know!

Patrick,
Check the threads on lap belts in Giulia spiders. The last of them had seat belt anchors built into the chassis. Mine is one, Chris Boles might know of others. I'll dig through my photos and see if there are photo's. My car, being an odd one, came to the U.S. with period competition belts, still there. If I find the photo's I'll E-Mail.

Just do the tap-tap thing and you will know where to put it. The cowling back of the seat on mine needed it and I have yet to do the trunk lid. Because when opened it would show.

Hi Phil and welcome to the BB! There are a bunch of spiders in here, Patrick's is black, Subtle's is grey and mine red. We need to know which color! We would love to have pictures of the RHD version, and I, in particular am interested in how things fit under the hood and under the car. There are some very knowledgeable color experts here, Terry Rushbrook even supplies the decals with the color code that lives in the trunk.
More information!

The "scoop" doesn't provide enough room for a 1750, or a 2 L.

However, Centerline provides a set of engine mounts that lower the engine, which is necessary. They also cant the engine over allowing enough room for the Webers. That is the other dimension that has to work.

This changes the geometry of the exhaust system and CL has some headers.

Then the throttle linkage needs to be re aligned.

But the results can be outstanding.

Hi Patrick
I have been trying to insert my 2 cents in here but I have trouble negotiating the thread site. I put a Denso on my 62 spider but with the engine installed it interfered with the steering box before I could tighten the belt. I had to move it above the engine. I did use centerline veloce mounts which are needed for the Webers. If I new how to add jpegs I would add them for you. I wish I could finish the engine compartment and move on but everything is so tight. I made the mistake of painting before the mechanicals and now I am working with blankets all over the place. Its wearing me down. Good Luck your my inspiration to keep going.

Meatbird, thats the way it is with these cars. like 3 pounds of Italian sausage in a one pound bag. Pulling my transmission tonight, without pulling the engine, I was amazed that the upper starter bolt nut, was STILL where it was as last time I did this in 1972. Just as totally in access able as always. It helps if you know Guido, my little Italian helper. He is 4 inches tall and very strong. He wields a mighty 14 mm! Keep at it!

Hi Al,

I may run into the same problem, as I'm also using Veloce mounts; Centerline or not, I'm not quite sure at the moment. I'll keep you posted right here, hopefully sometime in December.

Keep up the spirit and you'll eventually get there, I'm sure; just look how long it's taken me (and it's still ongoing).

The holidays and moving into a new house sure stopped the project cold! Now that things are settling down a bit, we should see some interesting progress on the car, and I'm hoping to have a running car sometime in Spring.

Did a bit of work in Berkeley today, mainly cleaned up and painted the drive shaft(s), gawked at some Carello rods and Arial pistons for the Sprint, and took the Sprint's 5.12 rear-axle apart for cleaning, and eventual installation of a limited-slip (transplanted for a '74 Spider). There's really nothing else to do after this but trailer the car up to Berkeley for its driveline install! Finally. This is planned for Saturday 2/28 - my next available Saturday.

And since we're starting work on the racing Sprint project, I'll be starting a new thread to document that project's progress - hopefully a much shorter electronic journey than this one.

Some photos below, and not necessarily related to the project. The first is my son Jules at his first vintage race event (CSRG at Laguna Seca), with Tina and Glenn Oliveria. The ensuing two photos are some '67s at Glenn's shop today, and a shop-interior shot. The fourth photo is that of my drivetrain, now with engine mount attached. The last photo are the driveshafts that we worked on today. The rest of the day was spent on lunch (sandwich, California Rolls, and home-made chocolate cookies) and working on other customers' cars.

Pat,

What the story with the #2 race car and that unpainted car on the lift?

Anthony,

I don't know much about the #2 GT racer, as racers come and go at Glenn's shop and I can't keep track of them anymore, though I hadn't seen this car before - it's a single headlight with a white fascia. As to the Healey on the lift, it's owned by a regular whom Glenn refers to as "Ferrari John"; he's putting the Healey back together with absolutely no regard for outer appearance. I believe that this is going to be a race car, with the entire budget going towards performance and safety (or maybe just performance). John owns a fly-yellow small-headlight Sprint that you may have seen on your various Monterey jaunts in the past.

Photos of some last-minute shuffling around of the car (from old house to new house) before taking the big trip up to Berkeley to have its drive-train installed. Sits kind of high, doesn't it? The engine, battery, and fuel will hopefully bring it down to a nice, low stance; I'm looking for the wheels to fill the wells nearly completely, with very little gap.

On another note, I'm thinking of buying a "bullet-proof" battery for the car, and yellow/red-top Optimas seem to have a good following - has anyone used one, and/or know which specification I should get? Thanks.
