That's not racing red. Much better! Glyptol! I was painting a windage tray with it, and realized it would keep the veeery valuable tool from rusting, and aid in clean up. Probably $150 worth of Glyptol there, easy.....

Pat
I have been following your restoration, great job and a wonderful source of very useful information.
I am also going through the pain of restoring a 1964 Giula Spider, now in the paint shop!
One question - where did you get the seals for the suspension arms? Can´t find this.
Regards
Antonio

Hi Antonio,
The old seals were deemed serviceable at the time, so I did not swap them out for new ones.

Flywheel and Piston/Rod Install
We did some more engine work today: install flywheel/clutch assembly; assemble new piston/liner sets.
Having examined the condition of the ring gear, Glenn decided that a new gear was in order; at least half of the teeth were badly chipped. We swapped out the damaged one for an NOS with a bench press, first heating up the assembly with a blow torch. Once the flywheel assembly was bolted to the engine block, the clutch and clutch plate assembly came next. The clutch had plenty of material left, so we re-used it. After some wire-wheeling, the plate was clean enough to be installed, along with the clutch. Done, and ready for the transmission.
We then moved on to assembling the new pistons and old rods. The rods were nicely cleaned up last week, and slid easily around the new wrist pins, which were in turn secured to the new pistons. In measuring the pistons against the liners, we discovered that there generally wasn't a sufficient gap between the two components. Alfa specs called for a piston diameter to liner wall gap range of between 2.2/1000 to 2.9/1000 of an inch; two or three of our set of four came in closer to 2.0 and 2.1. As a result, we honed all four sleeves to give them an extra 10,000th or two to make the range. With a piston-ring compressing clamp, we were then able to easily insert all four pistons into their respective liners. Next week we'll be installing these into the block, I suppose, and possibly installing the head; the front cover needs some cleaning, however.

Great progress! Great pictures!
Two things Patrick. First tell everyone where you found the nice HD pressure plate. That IS the correct one to use.
Second, with your old ring gear looking like mice have been at it, your starter drive will need attention. Read my old posts on this or send me a PM.
{I also make a special main bearing cap pulling tool for those that do not like aluminum bits inside new engines when checking clearances. I need PapaJam to name my tools and give then strange numbers. Unlike my $17,500, liner seat cleaning tool, prototype made by Richard Jemison, the cap puller was less costly as ... I.... made the prototype.  }

Innovations for old cars--it just doesn't get any better.

That's a 6C1500!
Gordon, the pressure plate was not quite as pretty before I gave it the wire wheel, and it came with the car's 1600cc.

Not as easy to find as I would like, Patrick. these are patterned after the GTA units rather than the lighter TZ pressure plates. These are the ones I like for all vintage applications with the 1600 size flywheels. All you could wish for.
