For Jan's sake, Stuart, I refuse to allow you another restoration project!
Happy "Mille'ing" next week! If I'm able to get up early enough and drive 1.5 hours to San Francisco, I'll be there at the Fairmont to send you guys off. Laurence will be going this year, will he not? I hope to do it someday with you all as well.

Dear Patrick, Tina, & Jules, or is that list backward?
I will be on this Cal Mille, however not in the little spicy meatball. I've entered a 1938 BMW 328(!). Still under 2 liter.
I'll be in the Giulietta this Saturday for the "Lap of Marin" with my daughter.
I look forwards to Jules' 1st Jaunt! A name for you to use next time you lead us around!
Your friend,
Laurence

Patrick where did you get your brake shoes relined and what material did you use?
Cheers,

George,
My mechanic, Glenn, farmed out the work to a local outfit here in the Bay Area; I'll check with Glenn and report back.

George,
The rear drums on my '65 are like the old 2 shoe fronts and have a bonded, not riveted race lining. Its pretty hard. In front, with the discs, I also use a fairly hard pad. FYI, these do not need to be hot to easily stop the car, they get better when hot, but it is still possible to stop as quickly as my BMW M3, with them cold. The BMW weighs 3300 Lbs to the Alfa's <2000. The BMW has ABS, while my foot is the Giulia's "ABS".

I very tiredly made my way up to Berkeley today, and with the help and direction of many good friends, began putting the 3-shoe brakes back together.
You may recall that the shoes had already been lined (George Kraus - I'm still going to get you answers to your questions), while the backing plates awaited work. The backing plates have now been powder-coated, and the scroll/nautilus welded back on. According to Glenn, the scrolls had to be cut off so that a detachable zinc (?) material that's part of the assembly doesn't get melted during the powder-coat process; it was either that or no powder-coating. We all liked a nice powder-coat, it turned out! Re-welding the scroll was easier said and done, as we had to fabricate a special tool to hold the scroll against a very-stiff spring, while the welding took place; I learned to use a metal-cutting band-saw in the process. This took about two hours, but in the end we had a nice tool that will likely never see the light of day again.
Two weeks from now we'll be reinstalling the brake cylinders and shoes back onto the backing plates, after which the car will receive the assembly. Once that's done, we'll turn our attention back to rebuilding the engine.
Following are photos of Glenn doing some precision welding, and a black Sprint that happened to grace the shop today. It wasn't the only one - we had a red one that came in for service, as well as Matt's white Veloce for a short visit. Roald's black Ti and a white Super also came by - a busy day at the Oliveria shop.

Don't know about the Spider, but the 105 four-doors all of a sudden seem very enticing.

Just you wait until you need a few moments "alone". The spiders are invaluable!
{Can't find the picture of your feet!}

George, here's Glenn's answer to your questions:
The lining material is modern (not woven) auto lining. It is lightly bonded (glued) and riveted to the aluminum shoes. The place is JT Brake & Clutch in Oakland. (510) 835-0545. They need to know the finished diameter of the drum so they can arc the linings to suit. The lining material should be no more than 7/32 inch thick so the drum can fit over the shoes with the adjusters at minimum... Glenn

Thanks Patrick, it sounds almost exactly what I now have. What I need is another set of shoes with good linings so I could just try them and see if it's thats the problem or if it's something else.
Anyone have a complete set of front and rear (or just front) brake shoes they want to sell? I will continue to search ebay too.
Thanks again Patrick.
Cheers,
George

Gordon, if your friend has signed up, please let me have his "handle" or name so I could add his car to the register. How's the snow, all melted?
It's two weeks later, and we've finished putting the front brakes back together. After last week's welding, we simply needed to bolt everything back on, including the cylinders (with new rubber seals and refurbished pistons), relined shoes, springs, and the entire assembly properly adjusted to receive the drums.
For next time at Glenn's shop we'll be cleaning and reinstalling the rear brake cylinders and putting together a modified master cylinder (the original is too pitted to restore), before we turn out attention back to the engine, which needs new pistons, bearings, and the head installed.
Photos below. Note the nicely fitting new Cunifer brake pipes! We also went ahead and added speed-bleeders from Centerline.
