1963 Guilia 1600 Spider Dashboard Cover Replacement

First time poster here. I am looking to replace the dashboard cover of my Guilia Spider (pictured below). Any insight on the best way to remove the existing cover? Do I need to pull the windshield off? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Mike Welcome to the Alfa BB.
Removal is not too much of a problem... the aluminum trim (with the flaking black paint) is removed and the vinyl is lifted away from the deteriorated foam.
Vacuuming and scraping will reveal the steel support panel.

Now comes the difficult part - what do you replace it with?

A - Source a painted Giulietta dash and substitute that?

B - Buy a hard plastic substitute that's available?

C - Attempt to re-cover with foam and vinyl? Good luck with this.

Not much help but 'dems da choices!

Thanks GTD. The hard part is getting to the screws that are pinched by the windshield.

This is an awesome car. One owner, was my father in laws first car. He bought it in 1963 when he turned 16 (we have the slip to prove it ).

I am planning to replace it with a replacement dash cover from Centerline Products Centerline Products: DD101 Dash Cover Giulietta/Giulia Spider

Is this option B that you listed?

We are planning a full restoration when we get some extra money over the next few years. In the meantime this should keep our feet from getting covered in rotten foam when we take it out.

Best,

Mike

Bingo!

This is a popular choice. It's an item that looks good in pictures but ... it's still a substitute rather than a reproduction of the original dashtop - IMO.

R i g h t ... if it's dry-rotted foam you seek - look under the seats!

I don't see why you and a buddy can't lift that windshield very carefully out of the way to get at those screws; my windshield was coming out anyway for re-chroming. If you plan on eventually re-chroming all the pieces on the car, this may be a good chance to do that since most chromed pieces on the car are fairly accessible - bumpers; front grille; hood scoop; glass supports; door handles; tail-light frame.

Removeing the windshield would be my choice....
One big nut on each side post and the small bolts thru the lower chrome trim and it lifts off in one piece.
Oh, and when you get the old one out, send it to me ! I want to work on rebuilding the foam and supports to make an original fit well.

I tried a similar dash cover I got from Italy, it was ok, but not perfect. So I ended up having my upholster do it and I think it came out great–see pic–thats me smiling.

It would be best if you repainted at least the dash when you have the old dash top off, if you're doing a piecemeal restoration. The better way would be to wait until you paint the entire car.

Dashboard cover

Mike, what did you do about your dash top. I'm going to try to do mine this winter. Any pointers?

Thanks
