Black face Gauge clean up project

I spent most of my garage time this weekend cleaning up the gauges for my Sprint Speciale and some Super gauges for my TI. I did a pretty detailed write up of the process for my blog if you care to check it out. Lot's of photos are posted as well.

Part 1: Cleaning up my SS and TI gauges « Alfa Romeo Giulietta’s

Part 2: SS Veglia gauge restore part 2 -finale- « Alfa Romeo Giulietta’s

Matt, the nice thing you have done is to "show and tell" and try to save people enormous wads of money. I tried to do that for rebuilding rear view mirrors but they can't find the water. A company in Palo Alto makes a fortune and turning business away doing what you are doing. One item, I HIGHLY recommend the Eastwood Zinc plating kit that uses 2 D-cell batteries to zinc plate the housings and the brackets. All it takes is wire brushing and about 5 minutes from breaking open the solution to closing it back up. It's great for anthing from fuel lines or brake lines to washers or anything you can submerge with a 2 quart liquid. Rick (Amy Z the printer from Ohio is my niece)

Rick, Should I open for business? Gauge repair is one of the easier things I've done. Oh, and BTW, got a spare rear view mirror? I am still needing one for the SS. It can be total crap and I'll do you proud and figure out how to clean it up. Helps that I know the local shop that does cheap mirror silvering.

Ciao.

Matt,
I read the full blog report and looked at Rick's recommendation of the zinc plating kit. What great motivation you have given me for nearly every part of the upcoming project!
Did you have a parts manual or diagram showing how everything went back together, or was it pretty straight forward? And when you say IPA, I am hoping that is not the beer you had on hand while tackling this project?
Good job.

Great job on the gauges!
I would like to have you do mine ... if I ever get them out of the dash.

Dan, rubbing alcohol on lint free wipes. As for a diagram, it's all pretty logical.

Roger, I would have charged myself $80 to do what I did to that tach. I didn't rechrome anything and I can't deal with yellowed plastic inserts unless there is a big outcry for me to get some made, but if it's just cleaning and functional repair, no problem, send me a picture and I'll tell you what I think.

Hi,
I have a number of faces available for the tri-guage on ebay AUS. They are accurate and I can do either english or italian. If any one is interested have a look on ebay Australia at my TI Super replica.
Regards
Jim

Has anyone tried to clean their yellowed gauge inserts via this method?
