Giulia Paint Time - Anyone have a Dark Blue Spider?
Hey all, I have to make a quick choice on color to paint my now bare metal 62 Giulia Spider! It was white and then red but I want to go with a dark blue if at all possible a color that was original.
I have looked at some of the color charts but not sure what was correct for which year and they don't show the color well or at least what i have been able to find on a search.
What would really help is any pictures of cars painted a dark blue that know what the color is.
thanks all for any help you can send my way. Michael

Oh how lucky to have a bare metal Giulia Spider and the possibility to paint it your favorite color. There are lots of links to color charts and paintcodes and the hard work finding the right color in different paint brands on this forum.
Here are some blue Giuliettas and Giulias to give you an idea. Originally I think Giulietta spider only came in Bleu Medio - mid blue - and the Giulia range did not come in any dark blue at all as standard, but as customer you could get it in any color you wanted at that time for a premium.
If you do not care for originallity you could paint it one of the Sprint colors. They had much more blue to choose from - Azzurro Iseo, bleu mare, azzuro nube, bluette and Tornado blue etc.
One of my favorite blue is Bleu Lancia, but I am not sure that will do on a Giulia. Bluette is fantastic on a sprint but maybe not on a spider.
If not blue a really nice and seldom seen spider color is dark metal gray metallic like seen on Lancias and Aston Martins - that is a nice one with red leather inside.

Lars and everyone thank you much for your quick responses! its really helpful although i am still undecided.
Lars, do you know what the color names are on the two top pics you sent? Also do you have a picture of the dark grey? i have seen a couple in a gunmetal grey but its not quite as stirring as i am looking for (see below) or maybe i should just go RED and be done with it.
it looks pretty good in sheet metal :
Thoughts??? Comments??

If I had another Spider to paint, I'd go with Bluette (see pic)

Your right Patrick a spider in bluette would be the most cool car on earth but you really have to want it because many people will find it boring or old school. I haven't seen one IRL.
The first two pics in my first reply show a spider recently sold by VSOC VSOC
VSOC just describes the color as blue but in my opinion it is close to Lancia Blue.
The grey color on your picture may be the factory gray without metallic called grigio grafite (graphite gray) this color tend to die on a spider in my opinion because it lacks a glossy shine. I think the dark metallic gray colors first became popular in the late sixties but I may be wrong. Here are some pics of some variations on the gray color.

I have seen that color on Sprints from that era (usually all faded to hell like the link below) Is that by chance Cobalt Blue AR 324? it is not Bluette or Medio Blue-they are not that dark.

Have you seen this thread about AR-319 Blu Tornado (Ditzler/PPG code "ALF319")?

"Tornado blue is a medium blue-gray" was the consensus on that color, so that wouldn't be what we are looking for. Cobalt blue looked the darkest from the color chart I saw from the 60's. Anyone got a photo of a car with that known color on it? Could even be a 67 GTV.

Referring to the attached color chart ...
The name of the color displayed in the first two pics in post #4 appears to be: AR 339 Bosboro Blue.
If you're looking for a shade brighter color with just a hint of violet/purple in it, then: AR 312 Medium Blue is your choice. This is similar to but not as purple as: AR 323 Skipper Blue.

Finding out today most of these obscure classic colors from the chart above have dropped off the database for all the major paint manufacturers. As the conversion to water base color continues, this is probably going to be more of a problem in the future. I think I can get medio Blue In Spies hecker, but the others don't bring up any formulas at all-they just are no longer recognized by the database. Checked Dupont, Sherwin Williams, Glasurit, and Spies Hecker. Didn't check Ditzler, as i don't like PPG's blues--have had problems with them in the recent past. They keep modifying their toners to meet new air quality standards, and I find sometimes they don't get it right with some colors.
