Sprint interior trim Q and door spear needed
OK guys, I took about 30 minutes this morning and scrubbed all the interior chrome pieces for the '58 Sprint. I have the door openers and the window cranks. There are four smaller trim pieces that fit the bases of those. There are four larger pieces that those rest and rotate in. Then I have two larger pieces that are too large for those to fit in. Anybody know where those go? They are about 2" in diameter. They are the top piece in the photo.
Also, the only piece of exterior trim I need is the short door spear, about 10" long. I have two longs, two mediums, and only one short piece. Mine are not chrome, but look like polished aluminum. There are some clips on the back, no screws. Anybody willing to part with one? Thanks a bunch.
Still looking for an average to poor condition airplane too!

Dan,
I have watched your threads with interest, I really like it that you are resurrecting your families car.
With the top chrome rings, my first thought was that they where from your dashboard, I measured the ones from my spider and they do not match (the ones pictured are too small). stll the sprint might have some additional clocks... My second look reminded me of the front indictors, my spider has Lucas lenses that are hold in place with a similar chrome ring.
This is the best I can come up with, I am more into the spiders. So I can't help you with the spear or the aeroplane.
Ciao,
Jelle

I cleaned up my only clear glass Lucas lense and it seemed to fit into the ring. My only question is how it is held by the indicator assembly? Can you take a close up of the indicator? I have them on the car, but they have been painted over, and I don't have any closeup photos of them. I think I have found the answer though!

turn signal trim?
Here is a detail of my turn signal. Does that seem to fit the bill for the unidentified trim piece? How does it go together in the car?

Dan,
The chrome ring will fit into the rubber housing. Unfortunately, my car is in the workshop so I can not take a picture. At home I have some parts (but still missing parts that I need to reassemble my car, they used to be there but I can't find them), but the rubber indicator housing I had at home is from Alto instead of Lucas, and it won't fit. But the idea is to fit the glass into the ring and then fir the ring in the rubber housing. I have made a picture of the alto housing that is basically the same, but unfortunately due to its size I can not attach it. If you sent me a PM with your e-mail address, I will send it. You can remove the indicator housing from the car, put them in the sun to make them softer and then try to fit the ring in.
good luck,
Jelle

The front turn indicators should be the same as the early Healey's. You can buy a complete setup from Moss Motors for $30 per side.
MossMotors.com - Restoration Parts And Accessories For British Cars
Well, at least that is what I put on my 750 spider which had the ones for the early Triumphs on there. Someone else will need to pitch in with which one matches the 101 series, but the MGA version looks right to me for that.
Hope that helps...
Jon
Forgot to mention that the other two rings are for either the window winder or the door opening handle. The larger size goes against the door card, while the smaller side goes against the winder/lever. There is a spring that goes in between them. You will notice 3 small triangle tabs in the larger piece. This is for holding the spring. The cup shape on the smaller piece holds the spring on that side....

I definitely don't have the spring. So it goes between the door panel and the medium size ring? There should be some tension pushing out the trim so it "stays put?"
The car is a 750, not a 101. A quick eBay search turned up a classic british parts supplier out of the UK that had the lenses and the housing for about 18 British pounds. At least one bit is so-called "obtanium!" ;-)GTD
Thanks for the quick response!

Dan,
This time I took a picture with my phone, not as many pixels, but stil good quality. The pic shows one set complete and some loose parts, from this you should be able to estimate the size of the spring (three centimeters wide and three centimeters high). Yes, it is fairly big.
As you can see in the picture, I have two types of rings, I guess one is for the door handle and the other is for the window opener.
Good luck,
Jelle

I remember seeing one of those springs. Maybe it is in the box I put the parts in, I'll have to look. Maybe it is still in the car, I don't know. I have four of the smooth rings, none of the "stepped" rings you show with the winder. Doesn't really matter for my purposes, though. Thanks for the good pictures! A lot better than my cell phone...

And how does the small set screw work? Isn't there supposed to be a round peg and a square peg type for the handles to mount to?

Set Screw
In my 101 Sprint the whole assembly is held together by tightening the setscrew in the crank against the winder shaft. I think earlier cars (certainly spiders) used hole and peg arrangements.
That spring could be anywhere; it is pretty well compressed when it's on and if the setscrew is loose (or you take it out without being careful) it can launch itself pretty far.
