New here with a Giulietta Spider and 2 questiones

Hi
My name is Magnus Holm and I writing from the westcoast of Sweden.

I have a 1960 Giulietta Spider AR1495*09006 sold new 2nd March 1960 to Hoffman Motor Car Co. New York. It`s under a total resauratione and I hope it vill be redy to drive next year (Alfa 100 year).
First questione:

When I got the car there was a 750 engine mounted and now I finally found a 101-engine. The question I have is: The engine do not have any stamped engine number at all. What kind of engine have I bought? The crankcase is markt 101.00.01.100-02. The rods are markt 101.00.02.020.00 (Berlina). As I was told the engine come from an Italien regisred early 1960 Berlina and the car crashed here in Sweden om the early 70:s.

The second questione is about the harness.
Itīs Braided Wire and not the Vinyl type that I thought was right on the 1960 cars. Do anyone have a clue? It seames to be the one that was fitted on the car from new.
Is wires from classwiring.com good stuff. Mine are bad and I have to get a new.

I will send pictures of the car later.

My English is not the best but I hope you understand what I mean.

// Magnus

Magnus, can't answer the engine question but can tell you, you should have a second series 1300 cc engine in your '60. What I can tell you for sure is that the wiring harness could have been vinyl or cloth (you have a transition model), and the harnesses from lionel at Classic Wiring are of excellent quality.

Good luck with your project,

George

If there is no engine number stamped on the boss below the intake manifold, then the engine has a factory replacement block.

Hello Magnus, you seem to have progressed very far on your restoration. I think it's likely you will have it assembled by the centennial! If I may ask a question, where did you source your replacement rocker panels? Or did you fabricate them yourself?

Thanks in advance,
David

The panel on the photo is fabricated by my self. The outer panel (Do not know the right word) was fabricated i UK by eBay UK Shop - WOODS AUTOMOTIVE:. He has nothig listed now but I think he make them in order. Really good fitting.

Hello Magnus

Welcome aboard the BB, we have two '60 Spiders, 1495*08930, a 10 February 1960 build and 1495*10990, a 15 July 1960 build - both of ours had 00102 engines fitted when new.

On your wiring question, my 1960 Giulietta race car had plastic covered wire. For the definitive answer you need to contact Lionel Velez here on the BB. He manufactures complete looms for these cars. His fabric covered looms are plastic wire covered in fabric and appear original without the hazards of the original. If you cannot locate him here on the BB, try <lionel.velez@gmail.com>. I hope this helps.

Questione number 3 and maybe 4, 5.......

First about the engine. Iīm sure that my car would have a 00102 engine. The crankcase has the AR number 101.00.01.100.02. But according to the "Spare Parts Catalouge" it should be 101.00.01.010.01. Do anyone know the differens?

I have to contact Lionel Velez and here from him what kind of loom he can offer me.

Now a new questione.
Thats about the interior colour of my car. It shoud be black or beige/grey interior. I think black is a to hot colour of the seats and a little too plain, grey with red piping woud look relly nice and a bit more unusual then on most cars. Do anyone have a picture of a Giulietta with grey seatcovers?
The thíng I donīt understand is where the beige colour should be. Is it the carpet or what.

How about the seatcovers that Re.Orginales sell. Are the parts they sell good overall.

The only thing Iīm waiting for is that my currency should be a bit more valuable compared with the US-dollar before I start to buy parts.

Generally, the red cars had black seats, black vinyl under the seats and the rear crossmember in front of the spare tire area. The carpet set was the transmission tunnel, and the insides of the sills. The floor mats were ribbed black rubber with the Alfa insignia. The firewall and spare tire were also covered with the ribbed rubber, as was the trunk floor. All these are available as upholstery kits for these cars, both here in the U.S. and from Christian Ondrak, at OK Parts in Germany. Many of these items may be better sourced in Germany to avoid shipping costs.

Giulietta questione nr 5......

Hi again.

My camshafts i rusty and before I start to look for some better I have one more questione.
How do the engine works with Alfetta 1,8 Euro camshafts. Do they fit and
how is the engine works wiht them and the orginale carburatore (Solex APAIG).
Or should I go for orginal camshafts.

Hi Magnus,
With any Alfa engine, there is much to be gained with the use of modern cam design.
Contact AlfaR7 here on the BB. (Richard Jemison).
