Piston / Id
[b]I have tore my engine down AR#00536-07913 and the numbers on the piston read 78- 66248/4 across the top of the dome. inside the piston on the skirt there is AE 2927. I am trying to find out if these were standard 1600cc pistons. I think this engine is a 1966 not sure either...many thanks John

Yes, these are standard 1600 pistons. However, they are not original to the engine. The engine serial number, 07913, puts the build date about 1966 when Alfa was using pistons with an AE 2399 designation. In 1971, Alfa started supplying reinforced pistons with the AE 2927 designation.

Useful info indeed. Were there similar variations for the other 4-cylinder pistons too, Jim?

Yes. The 1300, 1600, 1750 (incl Spica cars) as well as the Montreal engines were all fitted with new, reinforced pistons in 1971. The AE numbers, both pre and post reinforcing, are specific to each engine size.

Many Thanks Jim,
The center two liners had some leakage therefore I had to free them up. The rod and crank bearing are .010 I guess from the last rebuild. Of course Jim I am trying to save as much money as possiable with the rebuild. Should I just go for a set of four pistons and liners and if so would you go with the Borgo, or do you think maybe news rings on all and try and find two good liners. Jim I would like to hear what you think..I am in Princeton,NJ and I am hoping to finish this car soon..I have had it in peices since the mid eighties. I bought this engine from a great guy in Washington State and got the duel Webers with it. all the best.... John Gallo

John:
I am in the process of rebuilding a 00536 engine for my Duetto. I have purchased new piston/liner set, and the current pieces don't look too bad. Sounds like your pistons are better than mine, which are the original 2399. The liners have no lip, and should hone out fine. Of course you should put on new rings...

Greetings: I purchaced the set from IAP, back a few months ago when they had a 20% off sale on these kits.
Going with new sets is indeed the best approach. I recently renewed an Alfetta engine I bought , and I found the liners and pistons to be practically brand new, so I only replaced the rings. Still did a full head job and a crank polish.
