Question Keys!

Hey guys!
I am pretty sure that I need some keys. I spoke with my uncle (possibly the last owner of the Sprint), and he said he "might know of two places that the keys might be." I'm thinking they were put into a junk drawer 30 years ago...
So, I need to source some keys (ignition? door? trunk?) for my '58 Sprint Veloce. I've checked Centerline and Int'l Auto, as well as the link on the 750/101 Yahoo! group. Is there one key, or two, or three?
Do I need to replace the door locks, ignition switch, and trunk lock (not that I have one!) to get keys? That will be unobtanium in my wallet!
Thanks for any clues or rabbit trails you can direct me towards.

Take the locks out of the car and take them to your local locksmith. You can have them all keyed the same or differently. Also have spare keys made at the same time so you have some for your key book. If the locksmith looks at you strangely or asks, "What do you expect me to do with these?" Find another locksmith. There's a difference between locksmiths, just like there's a difference between shopping at Pep Boys where if it's not in their catalogue book, they can't sell it to you based on the information you furnished.

It will be money well spent in the long-run and all the locks will be taken care of at one time, instead of repeating the process every time you have one fail or lose a key. The hardest one, will be getting the steering key assembly out, but the model you're asking about should have a dash ignition key assembly.

Some of our cars were keyed the same, some had three different keys, depending on what previous owners had done.

I don't have a key to start with. Would that matter to a locksmith? Can't they rekey the locks to fit whatever key they have available? Or do I need a special Giulietta type key (if that exists) to take to them?
I have several local locksmiths in the next town. I can try all of them if I need to.
So how do the locks and ignition switch come out? The door panels are off the car, so I have total access there. What about the dash? Do I have to do any major disassembly? I need to have the locks and switch out in just an afternoon, or is that time unreasonable?

Dan,

If you buy a new ignition switch it will come with keys. Probably be less expensive than finding blanks and getting them cut. Several suppliers including Centerline and Classic Alfa have them and they are reasonably priced: - 750/101 ignition parts

The door and glove box keys are the same key type. The Taylor blank you need is R63R.

The trunk lock is a different blank and it is 63R.

Chuck
