Patrick,
Ask Richard Jemison -Alfar7- about his multi disc street/track LS units. Mine, by Jack Beck some years ago, works quite well, and is far superior to the 68% locked GTA unit I started with. I've never favored welding up the old, comparatively more lightly constructed, 750 units, as I have survived a broken axle (at the splines) once with an Alfa locked rear end. I have done the same, several times with the splined transaxle end of the drive-shaft in my 275 GTB when it's locking (not LS) GTO style differential locks up, releases and then locks again on damp tracks. In the Ferrari, the loud "bang" as the shaft snaps is followed by no power to the rear wheels, and no other damage. The loud "BANG" when the axle shaft snaps in an Alfa can be followed by all manner of rear axle unpleasantness, and excursions in directions not planned or desired. I prefer a nice, properly set up LS unit with the vintage cars, as I too am pretty vintage and the unplanned trips into never-never land or barriers, either stationary or moving, is no longer "fun". Just my opinion.

Have RJ's 4.11 lsd set up on my Spider--and it worked very well at Portland.

Both on the track and during the hard driving on the Mount Hood trip.

Glen Oliveria can install a 5:12 in a 101 dif, but it ain't easy. You need to mill the unit to make it fit.

Glenn IS doing exactly that for me, I believe, but he hasn't said anything about milling.

It is the smart way to go. A welded diff is cheaper but a pain in the pits.
Sid Gage is looking for your email to remind you of the Alfa group at the Sears Pont race on 9/26-27

He's found it; I received his e-mail and one from Jeff Hill as well. I'll be there, but to do what I don't know, since my "race car" is still sitting on my driveway being a street car without an engine... unless I can park my Spider in the paddock with your racers and pretend that it has some business sitting there. In any case I look forward to meeting you, Don!

Patrick, it has been very good to follow your thread on rebuild of the Giulia Spider but this one is looking even better...
Congratulations!

Thanks Carlos. The plan this weekend is to take the car cover off of it, and stare at it.

It's too hot to work on it! Clocked 107 degrees F on the way home today, with low humidity, however.

Looks like I'm starting to gather some steam on this racer build - yipee!

I was supposed to merely drop off the '79 LSD at Glenn's today, but ended up spending most of the day in his shop taking it apart. The axles are out, as well as the differential gears. These will get cleaned up, coupled to a 5:12 gear-set, and re-assembled with the already-powder-coated drum brake backing plates and axle tubes. This means the rear end is pretty much out of the way. I also dropped off the gearbox, which seems to be a five-speed, and will need to be looked at. Other major systems to be refurbished include brakes, and naturally the engine. I've already bought a set of race pistons/liners, and have a Veloce oil pan waiting in the wings. I also have a set of Webers, but they don't match! We'll see if there's any way we can make this work.

I'll be spending some time this weekend putting the car on jacks and taking off the brakes, and further disassembling the suspension and existing rear axle. Probably won't get much more than that done, but it's a start. Will take pictures.

Most exciting is that I get to start buying parts again! Trolling for some Centerline springs and Koni shocks... I'll also need to find/build some period-proper race seats.

Hi Patrick, I'm glad to hear of the progress, and look forward to seeing at the track in the spring. I am sure others here have a better feel for what modifications are ok with CSRG than me, however it may be worth looking into before getting too far down the road. Making a Veloce motor, a five speed, and a late model LS all seem like they could raise issues. I would love to put a five speed in my car. Driving on the freeway with four is a serious drag although it seems just fine on the track. Can I put in a fifth gear if I promise not to use it on the track? Cheers, George

DO reinforce the trailing links!

Thanks for those reminders, George, I will double-check again with CSRG rules, though I remember CSRG accepting improved oil pans.

Between babysitting and just slacking off, I actually put some work in today on the Sprint. The gas tank is off, as are the brake drums. The drums were slightly stubborn, but a nice long screwdriver and a torch coaxed them off of the axles. Tomorrow's plan is a bit ambitious, in that I'm again on babysitting duty: take off front brake assembly and suspension, as well as the rear axle. Doesn't sound like much, but for some reason I don't accomplish much anymore in a day. Following are today's photos. I've captioned the first one: "there goes my college money".

A few more. The last one is chairs set out and waiting for my beer buddies to arrive. Notice anything wrong with the photo of the drum?

That one's too easy for ya, Gordon.

I'm really enjoying this tear-down; it's great to know exactly what to do, and have all the right tools at my disposal. I'm looking forward to whacking those tie-rod ends with a sledge again - a strange sense of satisfaction when the taper fall out after a good rap!
