lost spider key, need ideas
Hey All,
What a nightmare this is becoming! Of course, I have brought it upon myself. Typical me.
Anyway, the key is gone and I don't have a spare. Yeah, brilliant, I know.
So, I called a mobile locksmith. He quoted me $500. I told him that I would decline. Ok, those weren't the words that I used.
I went to the hardware store. They wouldn't let me try their blanks to see what would fit. They just directed me towards a locksmith shop. Drove over there. Closed. Drove back to try again. Shooed me away to another locksmith. Drove over there. He told me that he wouldn't sell me a blank. I don't know if he is trying to maximize his bill or if there is a problem with people making keys for bad purposes. If that be the case, then I would have thought that since I had the ignition switch in my hand that I would be a proven non-criminal.
OK, Alfisti, this must have come up before for people. What can be done? Any other ideas on getting this worked out? Anybody got a blank ket that will fit these locks, or info on which type of blank to use?
Thanks,
Jon

here's where you can get your blanks.....Replacement car and motorcycle keys, keys for classics ....get a spare too :-) They could actually cut you one if you would have the code, but I doubt you do. Once you have a correct blank, a good locksmith should be able to cut you a key though, IMO

Hey Terry, I'm not sure if you were asking me or Peter. He did have a link in his post to www[dot]keys4classics[dot]com
I took some pictures of my lock and sent over a note to them with all the information that I could gather.
BTW, the Yahoo group had an old posting with this information on blank codes:
Trunk key: Taylor: 63S and DL: R63TS
Door Key: Taylor: 63R and DL: 61G
Ignition Key: Taylor: R63R and DL: R61G
I will report back on the saga as it unfolds. In the meantime, I sure wish I could find that @#$$^ key. You all know how this story ends, right? I will find that key laying out in the open about 3 minutes after I get a replacement key working!

I have never had a lock shop refuse to make a key for me in California; granted I've used the same locksmith for years, and yes, the personnel has changed over time; but, I imagine my reputation may have preceded me from comments like, "You're the lady we've heard about."
I've taken in ignition switches, door locks, trunk locks etc. and they've always made keys for me without question. If you have Triple A, have them cut a credit-card spare key once you have a new key made. They're limited use, but in an emergency can be a life-saver.
If they were concerned about you being a thief, I would think that checking your driver's license against the car registration would have proven you were the same person. Possibly, you got some one that didn't want to be helpful, was new, didn't want to be bothered or was having a bad day.
On misplacing keys, Pat handed me a set of keys to the Lancia Coupe and I got distracted and set them down on a bookshelf in the entrance hallway with some knick-knacks. We looked high and low for them. I didn't find them until about two years after he died. Had they made it to the key book, rather than me getting distracted, Pat wouldn't have had to tear the ignition out of the Lancia. He was not happy.
Best of luck.

BAD JON!
Your brother has them? On my '65 there are only 2 keys; glovebox, door and trunk are the same, ignition is only ignition,
AH! Heres your keys! Right here on my computer keyboard!

More keys!
In the past, when I've run into a car with a bunch of keys, different for glovebox, door and trunk, I have pulled my glovebox lock, and with its key, had the car with the hodgepodge tumblers all keyed alike to my key & lock. Makes the owner of the other car happy, the locksmith happy, and now only everyone on the BB knows a bunch of cars are keyed like mine!
Old (... almost as old as me) Ferrari's, like the one pictured below, (a 166 from '48) were all keyed alike. Same with model "T" Fords. (Older than me!) Didn't seem to increase theft of these cars back in the day, and not NOW either!

Um.... No. That's my friend Skip McCabe re-buckling the hood hold down straps. We were looking it over.

The one on the right looks like the ignition key for mine alright. Any chance that I can get you to take a good picture of the other sides of those. I will see if it will help me in getting the right blank.
Cheers!

Thanks,

Option 1 for me is pick the lock.
Option II if option 1 fails is scewdriver+vicegrips+hammer
Option C is ditch the lock and switch and opt for a race car starting method. (switch+button)

OK, I'll admit, I first forgot to add the link....I then edited it quickly....if you edit within a minute or so, the note that says you edited your post does not show.
So my post was out there for a very brief period without a link....and no, you're not losing your mind
