Well, considering that my '65 Spider is riding on Cinturatos that I bought in the '80s and I have a set of 15x5 mags that need tires, 8 is not too many !!

That is a smokin' good deal. Probably the last chance to get a 165-14 tire for under a hundred bucks. I just mounted a set on my car, and love the feel.

Your comment about your ancient Cinturatos reminds me of the Pirelli P3s which came on my mom's 2000 Berlina. They were like driving on a wet road. They were so rock-hard that after 40,000 miles my dad gave me permission to destroy 'em. Luckily, a few Friday night drag races got rid of 'em. Replaced the P3s with the Phoenix Stahlflex (aka the Semprit Hi-Speed)- it was like bolting on a set of qualifying slicks in comparison!

If you saw my other post on the 165-14 Vredesteins, the salesman at Performance Plus said that they don't stock them and offered to order a set for $95 each. Universal Tire in Pa. has a huge stock of them at the same price, but it would cost $100 for shipping.
Might order a set of those for when the Dunlops wear out.
My garage will look like a tire warehouse!!

Excuse the slight thread highjack, but I just gotta comment on the Phoenix Stahlflex tires. In 1978, these were the hottest autocross tires available for a Stock class car. Our 1971 1750 Spider won the 1978 SCCA Class D Stock & Woman's E Stock National Solo championships on 195/60x15 Stahlflex's. Phoenix remained the tire of choice until the Yokohama A001R. I sure didn't know the Phoenix was a Semprit in disguise...did they have the same tread pattern?

Yep, the two tires were identical mirror-images. Phoenix went belly-up, and Semprit began producing the Stahlflex 3011 under their own name. That was a great tire in 195-60/14. To me, it was the spiritual sucessor to the CN36 Pirelli.

Randy, sorry for veering off track

Has anyone fitted these to a 101-series Giulietta Sprint? I'm looking for the best skinny-tire options for all-around handling while still keeping the vintage look and stock fit.

My recently acquired 101 Spider came with new Vredenstein Sprints, but in 155x15. They're shockingly nice tires! I've been pushing the car than I expected in the twisties, and never feel like I'm low on grip. If you're sliding around on these tires in a near 50 year old car with no seat belts or or other safety features you're a braver man than I.

Another option for 155/15 tires is the B F Goodrich Radial T/A, which costs about $65 at Tire Rack. They became available last October, so I'm not sure if they still have them in stock. These tires are so much better than anything I've ever used on the Giulias (wet and dry conditions), they're quiet, and they look better (to me) than the Vredesteins. I'd be careful about the 165/15 tires on a Giulia, since I've had rubbing issues in the past with them, as have others.

The BFGs are apparently still in stock at Tire Rack (see link), at $64/pop. The tread pattern seems to put more rubber on the road than Vreds - I'd try these if I hadn't already bought my Vreds.

I have used the BF Goodrich tires in the late 80's on my Giulia and they were great. I sill have them on the car, which is awaiting restoration.

I am just about to order a set of them for the Sprint, but have to figure out what inner tube size to order.

Any one know what size inner tube to order for 155/80 HR 15 tires size and where to get them?

Frank,
Inner tubes will usually cover a range of sizes (like 145 thru 175 / 15, I think), so you wont need to be too specific. I don't know if Tire Rack and other sources carry tubes, but you might check with them. I was able to get new tubes from the shop that installed my new B F Goodrich tires last year since they had them on the shelf. It should not be a big deal to find new tubes. Oh, and ask them to use a collar on the stem of the tube to keep the stem centered in the hole in the rim. My installer added these as a no cost item, and I didn't even ask for them. They're a good idea since they protect the stem from damage at the edge of the hole in the steel rim.
Good luck (and get that car finished so we can see it in Baltimore in 2010),
Jim

I just picked up a set of these. I'll let you know how they work after I get 'em mounted. Thanks for the tip!
