Softer linings might help the situation. Many 750/101 owners living in larger metropolitan areas can get their shoes relined locally by a company that handles truck brakes. But, you could take your shoes to a local reliner, see if they can assess the hardness of the material, and ask whether they can replace it with anything softer.

It's a combination of the high effort and the lack of progression - it goes like this: push hard - little effect, push really hard - starts slowing, push a bit harder than that - four wheel lockup. Exciting with a 9% grade on a curvy road in the PA mountains.

OK, locking up is NOT normal (I think my pedal would break off before my brakes would lock).
Might there be oil on the linings, producing this non-linear effect?
750/101 brakes are complicated. You have to adjust the angle of the shoes, as well as adjust how much free play there is on each shoe. Lots has been written about these procedures.
Pulling the drums, and inspecting things will tell you something. But yes, some attention does seem necessary.

There can also be great variation in the quality of the lining material. Also documented here.

Most of my braking problems have been resolved by using the correct linings from Alfastop! As I recall they are Mintex but a different lining material front to back. Lovely car!

Thanks for all the nice comments. I guess the other thing I wanted to prove (to myself, mostly) is that there's no reason not to drive a well sorted vintage Alfa on a long trip. She came through with flying colors on that front.

New acquisition
Nice looking spider - congratulations. Also on a successful road trip. Do you know what the color code is ? It appears to be a red/orange which is the same color as my 61. Not too many around in that shade and mine is almost in need of a new paint job one of these days. Solex is giving me major problems however and am sorely tempted to get a Weber. Just rebuilt it and still cannot get it to idle well.

Hi all. Just a quick update on my brake problems As you may remember i had to exert way too much foot pressure to get my Veloce to stop. The shoes had originally been relined by Ott's Brake services here in Portland, OR. as a possible solution I recently ordered a set of Ferodo front shoe linings from Tony at Alfa Stop and got them just before the Forest Grove Concours d'Elegance but didn't have time to put them on before the show. I just got the new relined Ferodo shoes back today and put them on. What a difference!!! What a great improvement. Stops on a dime with moderate pressure.
So, linings do make a big difference. Now I will order the rears to increase the power.

I'm not sure on the paint code, I'm afraid. I believe it's simply Farina Red, AR514, but I could be wrong. My first four Alfas were non-red, so I think I'm entitled to a red one.
The PO told me he had the Solex rebuilt by a shop in Wisconsin, and they did a really nice job. He couldn't remember the name of the place, of course. It really does run beautifully.

I did read that, thanks. I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't even pulled the wheels and drums to see the kind of material that was used. The car has gone to bed for the winter, but with the dollar as strong as it is against the pound I might just go ahead and order a set of shoes from Alfastop anyway.
