Holiday Drive Report
I just got back from a 3 day holiday near Mt Baker in the North Cascades and wanted to share some pictures. For those in the NW corner of the US or in British Columbia you need to add this to your must do list. From the town of Glacier the road rises about 4200' in 23 miles first through old growth forest along the Nooksack river then getting serious finally breaking into alpine country for the last half dozen miles. Lots of twist and turns. The upper highway has no armco due to the heavy winter snows. As you can see in September we still have snow patches below 5000'. On Monday morning, Sept. 1st, I got a clear run to the top only overtaking one car who pulled over immediately, rare in these parts. I had to wait at Heather Meadows 2+ miles below the top for some traffic to clear before the final go. Unfortunately Monday had constant clouds moving up the mountain and little view. Coming down the clouds finally broke around 4PM. A favorite late summer Northwest trick. Tuesday broke clear and I got a second run this time with no traffic what so ever. Twenty-three miles of bliss between 4500 and 7500 RPM. Two other roads worth checking out if you get up that way, Mosquito Lake Road from the Mt Baker Highway to Rt 9 in Acme - about 13 miles of foothill twists completely un-patrolled; and South Pass Road from Everson NE until it has to bend back or enter Canada finally ending in Maple Falls on the Mt Baker Highway.
