ebay 750B Sprint Project?
Yes I've been busy posting about other cars and trailers and such. Since there are more experienced people on this board I thought I'd run this project by everyone.

750B Sprint Normale. Abandoned racecar project - I'd just resume the racecar creation process.
Good idea - bad idea - run away?

Early sprints
Are very rare- this is an "eyebrow" car- not much after this (still in 58) they switched to the "busier" style grilles. Like any vintage race car project- look at the groups running in your area, the types of cars etc. If you can configure it to be competitive, and you like sprints, this might be a "good" deal. The missing eyebrows and grill are a bummer though- finding those could easily exceed the price of aquiring the whole "package" (heads are getting hard to find too) To do justice to any Alfa, race car or not, it should be presented with the key trim elements in place- costly but worth it- in my books. Good Luck! Fred.

Er, well it is easy to see that comment is BS ...
I guess this car is still saveable and as they have not actually started the race building process you could either save or continue ... but I'd not believe what the ad says after that blatent lie above.

Not sure what your experience has been. From my own time messing with
cars I have to say your best bet is to find a done car. The best deal will
be a car that has run recently and is well set up. I built myself a race car
and ran it for four years. I would never do it again because the costs of
truely building and sorting a car from scratch is far more than you can dream
of........

I agree it would be more fun but I'm not sure how much work I really want to do or have done to get a car ready. Starting with something that needs finishing instead of needs everything might be a good idea.

Looks like a decent parts car or a very intensive restoration project. There doesn't appear to be any race car prep work started. This car is at ground zero, but has a lot of potential for someone with ample time and funds to see it through. You would be starting from scratch.
On the other hand, it is very cheap at this stage of the auction ($999).

To restore the car propely would take at least $30,000 in my opinion and a lot of time. I would rather see the car restored than turned into a race car, but it seems like a good deal at the current price.

I agree it often seems vintage race cars are merely gutted out cars that seem to have little in common with the car they were based on. Something like the rhd GTA that italcarguy has seems much better. Doing something like that would be a lot more difficult but the result seems very worthwhile. I'd try and find photos but I think you know the difference.

....plus the fact that "eyebrows" sprints have become so rare that I hate to see one that can be saved turned into a race car...

Stu is right about the cost- about the same to make a race car or "restore" it -probably more value in just putting back to original in the case of this model. Either way , a huge project and more suited to someone who is willing to do some of it himself- not a great first time kinda deal- always smart to know your limitations!

It depends where you want to race it. There are vintage racing groups like HMSA that look for originality. They'd prefer to see a car with all it's trim in tact as well as interior unlike VARA or SVRA who have mostly stripped cars. This car can still be saved and done right or restored as a "period correct" car that can run occasional vintage races and rallies.

I believe most people take the easier route and make a race car out of these old cars. Why?
Cause to rebuild a car into a race car is easier ... ie. you can always say it is just a race car, when somebody questions the panel alignment or details.
Restoring a car to concours condition is very difficult ... if the car is in poor condition originally.

Restore or race ??
I'm with Stu on the restore !!
I've got 2 x '57 Sprints, one a runner & the other, a very original "barn find", complete with straw in the engine bay.
On top of that I've got a '61 Sprint & a '60 Spider & my Dad has a '60 Sprint. I've got 4 x 105's & several others, Dad has 8 others
I'd love to race a 750 "eyebrows" Sprint, I've got all the bits ready, but the fact is, I've never found a shell that could not be restored, this one is a matching number car, with its original block - that's a rare thing today.
In your shoes, I'd grab it, then start looking for bits, the car still has the 6" headlight rims & the panel fit on the boot looks good - a legacy of being a hand built car. The tunnel has not been hacked open, hence it should still have the original tunnel box, the seats look correct, (750's have a lift out base, 101's have a fixed base). The interior trim looks correct, ideal for templates. Eyebrows & grilles do surface occasionally.
Join up with the 750 / 101 Group on Yahoo & experience the joy of Giulietta's
Cheers

Thanks for all your suggestions - see it would be hard to screw up a car with all this input. I've recently joined the Giulietta Yahoo group. There are some good pictures of similar cars in there - anyone remember off hand who owns that early blue Sprint - someone in Oregon?
