GTA 1300 Motor

I was just wondering what difference is there in a 1300 GT junior motor and a GTA 1300 junior motor, besides the pistons.

Very shortly - main differences are that GTA has a shorter stroke (and is therefore more rev friendly) and twin-spark head.

The GTA 1300 Junior is single spark not twin spark. The GTA 1600 is twin spark.

The GTA Jr had the 45mm Weber DCOE14's. It also had a higher quality crank. It was a very hot car. Ing Chiti liked it over the 1600 GTA. Check out the Andriessen book as well as the Fusi book. All sorts of weird and wonderful parts were listed in the Competition Parts catalog (which I have)

Hi David,

What do you mean by Compatition Parts catalog for 1300 GTA? Do you mean the Autodelta brown sheet of paper with all individual parts you could buy at that time including prices at the top?

A quick look in the parts books shows the following differences in the engines.

block
crank
head - to include valves, springs and seats
pistons and barrels
rods
manifolds
carbs
sump
flywheel
front cover
front pulley
oil and water pumps
S132A twin plug dizzy
generator and starter

Heck, even the dipsticks are different!
It would seem that about the only things in common are a few of the fasteners.

No not an Autodelta sheet. Alfa Romeo, Inc. (USA) came out with a competition parts catalogue with illustrations under part number "Publ. 104/February '77"
It has 41 pages and covers the GTA, GTA Jr, GTAm, Alfetta 116, Montreal, 1750
and 2000. In fact the listing includes two different crankcases, for the GT Jr - 74x75
and the GTA Jr 78x67.5 (as papajam & gt jr noted)

GTA Stadale,

I have to take issue with the nomenclature used to describe the heads in the early post. The GTA and GTAj heads were known at the time as twin plug heads. The twin spark nomenclature came along much later to describe, (and I supect differenciate from the earlier heads,) a redesigned head on the later fours.

Ken is absolutely right. "Twin plug" is correct for the Giulia-based cars
