GTam Fender source

Can anyone point me to a source or two for the GTam fiberglass fenders? Before I part out a rusty GTV2000 I thought I would consider my options. It seems to me that the radical GTam flairs would allow me to cut out all the rusted/bent areas. This somehow seems easier than trying to restore it to stock. I am not intending to build an all out vintage racer so I would keep the front and rear lid and the doors stock. OTAH, if I'm getting into cheesy, poser territory - tell me now before I make a bad idea into a bad, expensive idea.

Future generations will likely castigate me for butching the old gal but to me it would save her from the EBay vultures (of which I am one...).

Seems like a viable idea, but you still may have to do the sills and floors and possibly more depending on the extent of the rust, windows can be rusty after removing glass. The price of the flairs could exceed the repairs to the fenders.OH almost forgot the big wheels you will need to fill out the flairs will be expensive to.As for future generations, they can always return it to original if they want,if you scrap it,its gone for good. Its going to cost either way,do it if you want but i dont think it will save you any money in the long run,but i dont know enough about the cars condition to say for sure.

Nero: Definitely need to work on all the standard coupe rust areas. I am not really looking to save money necessarily but the car needs serious restoration to return to stock form. I am thinking that going with the am fenders might save a whole lot of work if I can just cut out the bad areas.

Nice custom paint...

Marc: Thanks for the sites - just what I was looking for. I'm surprised there aren't stateside suppliers...

Rich, call me at the shop if you still need a set. I keep one set in stock. Because finding them is not hard. Actually getting them is a whole other story. 253.804.0606

Unfortunately that car has a lot bigger issues than just the arches (rockers, window frame area, etc.) ... best of luck.

Pete:

No question, the car's got issues! I bought it strictly as a parts car and when I got it home my initial reaction was that it was worse than I originally thought. I let it sit for a few days and ignored it. But today I pulled it out and decided to give it a fair shake before I parted it out. The first thing I did was wash years of grime off it. As I did, I realized that with a couple exceptions the body is actually pretty straight. The right rear fender is a disaster, the outer rockers are toast, and the spare tire well is rotted.

OTAH, The inner sills are solid as are the floorboards. Much of the rust that you see above the belt line is surface rust that from unattended to scratches or poor prep prior to a poor paint job. The interior is in surprisingly good shape, the drivetrain is mechically sound and the motor might just live after all.

If I go with the am fenders I am going to cut out about 75% of the real trouble areas. Then again I might be way oversimplifying the process...

Bumpers are off! For that matter, so is just about everything else. The car certainly is going to be a challenge. Daron was generous enough to part with his set of GTam fenders which I'll have next week. This project may take a back seat as it occurs to me that I need to finish something before I jump into a project like this.

BTW, when I bought this car I was told the motor was stuck and hadn't been run in two years. It did have Webers (which I have never fooled with) but it was definitely rough. Just 'cause, we poured some MMO in the cylinders and let it sit for a few days. That freed the cylinders. Next we pulled the motor and powerwashed it. I noted that other than a couple of years worth of sittin' under a tree grime, the motor was surprisingly grease free and cleaned up quite nicely. I suspected that this was more than just another neglected Alfa.

I put it on my hot engine stand. The starter was toast so I replaced it and got it spinning. Sprayed a little starter fluid down the throats and got a pop (now it's getting interesting). About 10 minutes latter, the motor was (not so) quietly idling. No smoke, leaks, or whining or grinding- these webers are monsters and this motor is a beast! I put it in my '69 spider and promptly tore up the diff (in fairness, it was tired).

It would be nice to get this body in order and return the motor to it's rightful place.

Daron
I have a highly modified '71 GTV that I am considering using to create a GTAm replica. Do you stil have a set of the GTAm fenders? If so, how much are they?
