Campagnolo or Tecnomagneseo GTA Rim

I'm in the process of restoring two sets of 7 X 14 GTA wheels and noticed that one does not have the Campagnolo cast into the face like the others but has the webs and the casting number between two of them in the back like the others. It is a magnesium wheel that is identical to the others but the raised hole pattern in the front has a slightly more uniform sandcast texture than the others. This rim also has more machining in the front area of the bolt holes and the "valley" of the valve stem. Is this a Campagnolo rim machined by someone or a Tecnomagneseo production after Campagnolo sold that division? Here is a shot of this rim in etch-primed state.

Rich,

Good question. I have 2 sets of 14x7 with the Campagnolo stamping and one set without. All three sets look identical and I've wondered the same thing. Hopefully someone here knows the answer.

The smooth inner bit was more typical for Tecnos but the other part was usually also smoother than on the picture shown. I can't read the rim size designation but I do know that all the original Campys were 7K x 14, where "K" designates the type of shoulder on the rim. A "K" style shoulder is a very steep high shoulder that was commonly used on truck rims with tube type tires and it is no longer commonly used. I don't believe the Tecnomagnesio 7x14 replica rim had the K style shoulder but I am not positive on that right now. Rather, I believe the Tecnomagnesios were set up for tubeless tires. Maybe someone who has a set of Tecno 7x14's can chime in.

Regardless, there are definitely different castings for Campys around with no center hat, press-in centers and centers w/ clip. Also my 7" have "Campagnolo" cast into them, whereas my 6" ones don't.

Here is a picture of a smooth 14x7 with no "Campagnolo" writing currently on my GTA.

The Tecno's don't have the "spokes" on the inside and are made for Tubeless tyres
there are a lot of differences between the originals, depending what mould they used

These wheels are made in 14x6, 14x6.5,14x7 and very rare 14x8

When Tecno took over Campagnolo they continued casting wheels using the original dies to start with, so they had Campagnolo casting marks, fins in the rear and as original hole styling etc. We have a set of these wheels that we are saving for our GTA race car - call it a brand new set of ORIGINAL Campagnolo wheels (just that they came in Tecno boxes and have Tecno centre badges).

Then after a short time they seemed to move across to their own dies which is when they lost the fins in the back of the wheels and the Campagnolo marks in the front. The holes became a different angle and the wheels lost a lot of their beauty. The same happened with the 6" wheel.

They definately seemed to get more machined in the centre around the nose as well, as per your wheel, the lack of the Cmpagnolo casting letters is strange as it is without doubt a wheel from the original dies.

Strange Italians

I have 3 sets 6x14 GTA, all Campa, all 3 sets are different

1 set Campagnolo in front, with machined valve
1 set no Campagnolo in front, only small between the fins, with machined valve hole
1 set, no Campagnolo in front, only small between the fins, with 2 half holes to provide room for the tyre valve hole

Sorry rather than meaning the same thing happened for the 6" rim, I meant a similar process happened of change from Campag to Tecno - the half moon hole wheels are very early as far as we can tell, we have a huge mix of them here and it seems the half moon hole wheels are the earliest. The 6" rims always seem in the worst condition, I guess because they were the road wheels in a harsher environment.

My original Campy 6x14 wheels were rough cast on the outside and had simple holes drilled through a flat boss. They developed cracks radially outwards from the holes.

The Techno 6x14's are much better in quality as they have a smooth, painted and clear coat outer surface with the inside ribs and the stud holes have steel inserts for long life. The Technos were made in the middle 80's and are still as new.
