In Connecticut, where I live, the DMV requires emissions every other year. That means when I pass my emissions test (hopefully) in 2010, the next time I would have to get emissions would be 2012. However there is a catch, when a vehicle is 25 years or older in Connecticut, it doesn't need emissions any more.

My question is, has anyone removed the catalytic converter with a test pipe or just replaced the whole thing? I don't want to do headers or put a "fart cannon" on my Alfa, just want to take the cat off to get some more sound. If anyone has anything they would like to share it is greatly appreciated.

This is probably really common. I unplugged the power and connected a wire from the battery to the connector and the fan turned on. The relay on passenger side wall of the engine compartment, next to the AC compressor one I think is the fan. Would that be the problem or is there something else Im missing, maybe from the thermostat?

Someone replaced my gearchange with a pot of treacle?!

Was driving today and suddenly my gearstick went all floppy (no jokes please ). I can still select gears if I am *really* careful but the 'H' pattern is gone. I can change gears as I know exactly where they are, but there seems no guide to where they are now. Very easy to select 5th or reverse when trying for 3rd or 4th.

It seems the gearstick goes forward and aft OK but is loose side to side.

Initial thoughts were that one of the linkages at the gearbox had popped one of the ball joints. However this evening I clambered underneath and everything is visually OK. I didn't take the dust boots off but everything seems intact and moving correctly. Hence it must be inside the gearbox. Bugger.

As background the gearbox was overhauled around 15,000kms ago and the linkages were all checked and lubed at that time. All work by me.

Now I've looked through the gearbox repair manual and as far as I can see I may have had a failure of the internal reaction spring in the gearbox. This would explain why all the self-centering feel is gone.

I have the bits to fix it, but that will mean dropping the gearbox for the 4th time in 30,000kms… arse…

My air flow meter randomly broke yesterday. The metal piece on the spring is rubbing up against the walls causing it to get stuck along the way.

I was wondering if anyone had any information on replacements for my AFM, the Bosch number is 0 280 202 010. I read an article that said the stock AFM is very restricted and that ones taken from BMW 7 series cars are better.

If anyone knows anything or has anything stock or whatever let me know please.

Hi all,
I just drove back from Salt Lake City to Portland with my new Black 1988 Verde that I bought on e-bay a few weeks ago. This is my 6th Alfa. I LOVE this car. I'm it's third owner. It has 106K miles. Great condition, has _all_ the original stuff; stereo, first aid kit, manuel, tool kit, even an Alfa road atlas.
It made the trip no problem. The only issues it has, (and here come the questions), are a passenger door that doesn't open from the inside and a driveline "whirr" that sounds like it is coming from right below the gear shift knob. Is there a CV in that location? It only makes the sound in low gears when off the power and the clutch engaged.
The Doughnuts and timing belt and tensioner have all been done in the last few thousand miles thankfully.
But wow what a car! These have to be the best bargain going right now. And I think they are beautiful, but then I like women with, as Sir-Mix-a-Lot would say, "Back".

Its odd to me anyway, when I first start my car from sitting overnight it has good oil pressure. Once its warmed up the pressure drops off to nothing. Somtimes the light is on sometimes its not. Is this a normal thing for this car? Im wondering what weight oil should be in the engine? Would that really make a difference?

Just got the Verde back from the paint shop (pics to come:D) and drove it 2 hrs home. Next morning, while driving in a light drizzle, I turned on the lights and the car lost power. I quickly turned the lights off but power never returned and the engine died within a minute. I discovered that my headlights were disconnected but not sure if this is important.

I’m now completely stumped and here is why:

•Disconnected fuel line downstream of regulator, triggered AFT and got fuel – check (not sure about pressure:()

•Swapped the combi relay with no change.

•Swapped ECU for a spare with no change.

•Plugged in noid light on # 4 and got pulse (does this mean that combi and ECU are fine?).

•Pulled plug wire #5 and with spare plug and got spark to plenum – check.

•Checked grounds – clusters behind both headlights, plenum to valve cover, harness to back of valve cover and aux valve.

•Checked timing – belt did not slip; all aligns with cams and rotor on mark.

•Swap ignition module with no change.

During this I pulled plugs and all were wet wit fuel. Allowed all to dry out, cranked with no change. Like I said I’m puzzled.

What am I missing? I don’t know what else to check. All suggestions are welcome.

My V6 is burning up quite a bit of oil it seems. Whenever people ride in my car they comment on the smell. I have a pretty weak sense of smell, so it never bothered me.

Adding insult to injury I've got oil leaking from the cam covers. They are always soaked after a drive, and as you would expect, the timing belt is drenched in oil. Haha.

Here is a question. Who else is driving a car that SHOULD be dead? Who else is driving a car whose remaining lifespan can be measured in yards? What's your biggest success story and the farthest you got when you thought you were done for?

Maybe these are a lot tougher than we think? Obviously not an excuse not to be prudent with maintenance. I know what's at stake here, lol

I picked up a pair of Carello headlights to replace the crappy Elnas in my Milano. Before I install them, I want to understand what's going on in the back, since it appears different than the US-spec headlights. I've included a marked-up photo here. This is, of course, the right/destra/passenger-side (for right-side traffic).

I'm assuming the screws I labeled as "A" are the adjusting screws? But the bottom one has a white plastic lever on it, that seems to have two positions. I can't figure out what that's for.

What is the screw I marked with a single "?" for? It doesn't seem to be attaching anything. My wild guess is that it might lock the headlight aim and it should be loosened before adjusting the headlights and then tightened?

The thing marked with a double "??" looks to be some kind of a vent tube?

Also, the city light is wired into the same three-terminal plug as the corner indicator lamp. Is this just plug-and-play with the stock wiring harness, or will I need to wire something up for it to work? (In other words, did they have a different harness for the US cars, or is the wiring all the same?)

Thanks!
