Drive relay issues - 86 Grad

I am still trying to get one rather obstinate 86 Grad to run. It seems that some of my problem may be in the main drive relay. The schematic that I have (Thanks again, Papa Jam!) shows the following terminals on that relay: 31, 31b, 87, 50, 30, 15. The Bosch relay that I pulled out of my Spider shows Bosch #0280230001 and IAP shows that as the correct relay. Here is the problem: that relay shows the following pins: 31, 30, 50, 15, 87b, 87, 1.

Have I confused the life out of everyone at this juncture? Assuming that all of the corresponding numbers hook up to one another, I am left with terminals number 87b and 1 on my relay with no idea where they go. AND, a number 31b on the plug.

Also, can anyone help me with color schematics for my FI system? The one from Papa Jam is in black and white and having the wire colors to trace could prove to be a huge help - or, perhaps someone is knowledgeable enough to tell me what color each wire is that comes off of this relay.

Any help would be MOST appreciated.

Could anyone with an automatic Spider help with a little problem.

In the dark it is hard to tell when I have shifted from or into drive or other gears as there is no illumination.
Under the cover below the shift stick there is a black rubber mount attached to the stick with two black wires going to it. My guess is that this should have a bulb holder and bulb to illuminate the strip with R,N,D,2,1 which is directly above.
Or is this something to do with the start inhibitor that won't allow the car to start in Drive mode?

Any advice and/or photos gratefully received:)

I am thinking of getting a run of oil vapor condensors made up. These are the black canisters that capture the oil vapors from the cam cover. Nearly every one of these that I've seen has been rusted away and I have not found a source for replacements.

Does anyone have interest in a new one? If so, would you prefer carbon steel (as stock) or stainless?

Let me know,

Window Cranks - what besides IAP fits?

I have a 71 Kamm tail Spider that I've wading into; working on the interior right now....

I have the standard catalog replacement window cranks right now, and they work fine, but my door handles are non-standard and very cool looking. The door handles are not from a Guilia and frankly, I have no idea what they're from but I like them.

They're aluminum rather than chrome and a much older style look than the modern looking window cranks. They're sort of a volcano shape (yeah, but that's the best image I can think of right now) with the lever coming out of one side.

So, rather than replace these pretties with new chrome and black catalog handles, I thought I'd look for older style window cranks. Does anyone know if the splines on the window mechanism are a match with any other makes?
Could I use some cranks off an old Porsche, BMW, or even VW if I find something I like that matches my door levers?

I love this bulletin board - the collective mind knows everything! :D

Thanks guys!

Drive Shaft Slack... Causes?

Hey Guys,

I was getting my differential and gear box serviced the other day (87 Quad); while under the car with the technician explaining where the drain and filler plugs were I for the heck of it started shaking and rattling on stuff to check if everything was tight.

HOWEVER when I rotated on the driveshaft there was more play than what I felt was normal. It maybe moved 10-15 degrees in each direction (Clockwise/Counterclockwise) which I felt was excessive since my other spider's driveshaft is VERY tight.

My brain was leaning towards U-Joints ... but there wasnt any moaning or groaning that I could detect.

All thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Martin.

P.S. When the drain plugs were pulled from both the differential and gearbox there was metal sludge on them both... How much is normal wear?

Hi Guys,

slowly I'm ripping of the last hair which is left since I have the second master brake cylinder in and it looks like also this one is leaking. It started as I got a new one after the old one leaked and had a sagging pedal. The replacement worked for around 7 or 8 month and started to leak into the booster. So I got for free :D since it was still under warranty. Also this started to leak after just two month and just a couple of miles of driving.
No I have the third one in but there is still brakefluid disappearing. Non of the repaired ones got to the point of the sagging pedal but the leakage is annoying since the car needs to go out for service. Has anyone had this? According to my mech he had a couple of bad mc's but it looks like I had the most

All,

Looking for info on the best means for replacing a broken wheel stud (rear) on my 86 Graduate. I have already removed the rear brake and parking brake from the side in question.

Am I correct in assuming that I will need to pull the axle-shaft as well to gain enough clearance to install a new stud? Naturally, I don't want to do this... but clearance is really tight.

Any suggestions?

thanks.

I have this 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider Graduate. My pops bought it brand new in 1987 and its got about 50k on it. He said i can do whatever i want with the car because he isn't going to drive it anytime soon. I brought it to a euro shop and got it to run, and called it a day. So far the car is a blast to drive, but it could use a bit more oomph. According to my minimal research performed, the Italians did a wonderful job with the suspension on this car. I was thinking perhaps i can get it to go a tad faster in a strait line, and in the corners.
Here are some pics:

1991 Series 4 oil vapor hoses

Is there a source for these? I learned recently that the cars with the accelerator cable (1992+?) have a slightly longer hose to the intake, with what appears to be a smaller diameter end on the intake side. I suspect that 1990 Motronic cars may have the same setup as my 1991, which still uses the throttle linkage.

The hose to the cam cover looks simple (and straight) enough to be replaced with silicone or the right diameter rubber. However, the other hose (coming out of the bottom of the separator) makes more of a turning "S" curve.

Has anyone found direct fit replacements, or, successfully used other hose material? If so, what is the source and the appropriate diameter hose to use? IAP, Centerline?

Thank you.

Hi,

I'm trying to track down an irregular idle and very poor running on my 86 Quad. Doing the troubleshooting piece by piece and had a question on the AAV. Took mine off cleaned, dried, froze and heated it up per Greg's diagnostic thread. When frozen, I can only see a hole about 20% of the opening. When warm it shuts completely. At room temp, the hole is about 5%. Can anyone tell me if that's within spec and should I worry that it only partially opens? Thanks as always for the guidance, Chuck

Since I got my '91 Spider last year my gas pedal was sticking.

I tried to lube it several times and it works for a while and it starts sticking again. Especially when it gets colder for some reason. I used heavy duty bearing grease and even WD40 (before i heard that I shouldn't).

Now I had enough and i want to pull everything apart, clean it and lube it realy good.

I know that main culprit is probably bell crank and the spring right under the plenum (if that's the right word).

My question is: How dificult is to do it and what should I pay attention to when I do it?

There's a whole lot of wires and hoses that needs to be taken off in order to get there.

Thanks in advance...

After over 10 years of being alfa-less, I finally got me a spider, 89 graduate, last night. Since this is my first spider, I'll have plenty of questions to post in the coming weeks.
My car is equiped with AC, when I turned on the AC fan, it only blows thru the 2 outer vents. On those models, does the heater blow only thru the center vents and the AC thru the outer vents? Are there 2 seperate fans?

Another weird thing I noticed is that the passenger side turn signals, both front and read only work when the headlights are off. Once I turn on the headlights, the right blinkers stop working...I havent started troubleshooting any of this yet, but plan on getting started this weekend.
