Oil pump question?

So the pump on the left is the unit that came out of my 105 1600. It had relatively low miles and mic-ed out good. The part number on it is (alpha)13 15 58 001. The one on the right was in a box of goodies a friend had, and came in an Alfa Romeo parts bag with no part numbers. It looks nearly new and has strait cut gears. Is this just a later year stock pump, a 115 2L? Any problems fitting it on my 105 1600?

Also besides a larger mesh on the intake what else can be done to make the pump more efficient and increase longevity?

I'd be interested to know too. It appears that the actual driving gear is the same in both.

I know I've seen a site somewhere that offers one version over the other as an upgrade/stronger pump for performance use, but for the life of me, I can't remember where.

Can't see it in your photos, but does the straight gear pomp have a hole somewhere in the root of the idler gear? Is the pressure relief valve a ball or a cup? are the straight gears longer than the original? If yes to these three questions, Jack Beck turned out some pumps like that. They are not cheap, the helical grove on the idler pin provides better float for the idler gear, less wear, as do the steel gears. The only downside is these pumps are not as quiet running. I do not consider that a problem. If there is a whirr down in the bottom of the engine, and you know the source of the noise, and it "just does that" so what? Jacks pumps and copies are long lasting and reliable. Gordon Raymond

I do not remember seeing any other holes, but i can double check tomorrow.
It has a new cup, no scoring or any other wear marks at all.
I do not notice a difference in the height of the gears, but i did not check. How much difference are we talking here?

Did all Nord oil pump gears have helical gears through the production run?

Paul Spruell sold a straight cut gear oil pump for years, it's currently discontinued pending development of a new design.

If you need a check rebuild, send it to Jack B. or Richard Jemison (Alfar 7) or me. This is a GOOD pump. Noisy, but real GOOD. Gordon Raymond
