Starter motor shoulder bolt
I have just put my starter back in but it was grinding and I realised that I'm supposed to have a special shoulder bolt in the middle hole.
The only bolt that I have is a normal shanked bolt with way too much slop. I shimmed it up with some aluminium from a coke can. Played around until it was a tight fit. This worked for a while but she's clicking again
I inquired about getting one from IAP but they are charging $50 postage to Australia. (the bolt is $7.00)
Does anyone know where I can get one in Australia or have dimensions and Ideas for getting an existing bolt machined up. I have a guy that could machine it for me for $10 - $20. i would really like to have the proper article rather than a shimmed piece.
Please help,I'm about 2 hours work from starting her up for the first time. Need a solution fast.

If your machinist friend can make you the bolt then ask him to size the OD of the shoulder to fit the ID of the upper hole in the starter motor/bell housing and make the length of the shouldered section slightly shorter than the thickness of the starter/bell housing (so that that nut will tighten up the assembly).
Are there no Alfa junk yards, I mean recylers, in Australia? Used would be as good as new...

$50 postage to Oz???
That doesn't sound remotely correct unless it's FEDEX overnight express. They can put it in a small padded envelope and mail it off to you via regular first-class post for $5.40 or $11.00 for express 6-10 day delivery (about a 5 oz weight). If the knuckleheads at IAP won't do it, let me know and I'll get you one re-post it to you via first class mail. I've been amazed at how fast some stuff has gotten between Europe and the US via regular first class. My guess is all the light-weight mail goes by 747 between the US and Oz anyway and not by the proverbial tramp steamer.
I'd pull mine and measure it for you, but I'm in New York for a couple of weeks.
see USPS Postage Rate Calculator

I just bought a new shoulder bolt from IAP but it's in my garage about 1500 m away and it's snowing like there's no tomorrow right now and the wind chill is around 0F so if you can wait until tomorrow (Pennsylvania time), I will mic my new bolt that I haven't yet installed and give you the dimensions.

IAP only uses UPS. Once was charged $15 to ship 4 speed bleeders to California.
This is one reason that I rarely buy from them.
Also, they ship the wrong parts about 20% of the time.

Call your local alfa wrecker or mechanic.
They will have one.
I have a few and im in Sydney.
Amazing you would go to the hassle to buy a bolt from overseas when you can get one locally.
If all else fails, call an Alfa dealer and order a new one for about $15 aust.

I thought this would be easy but these bolts are hard to find here. We have a couple of good parts suppliers but they are both out of this particular piece.
I've tried Alfa dealers for parts before but they don't seem very interested in helping out. Making a couple of bucks on a part doesn't seem to interest them. Understandable I suppose.
Rob, If you have a name for a dealer in Sydney I'll look them up and give them a call. I would prefer to keep it local.
I have one more place here that I will try tomorrow.
Thanks for the help but I'll let you know if I can't find something tomorrow, so keep warm and dry for now.

Hey Andy.
Im in Sydney and I have a few.
Im in Brookvale.
Where in Sydney are you ?
Im sorry if I seemed abrupt before.
Im just the sort or person= If I need it= I want it NOW.+ the CORRECT part.
I know there are lots of great parts suppliers overseas, but lots can be found in your local area.
There is another thread elsewhere about a guy looking for an allen key bolt for his alfetta driveshaft. Why cant he put the correct bolt in it .Why does he have to sorce a normal bolt from a nut and bolt place.
That thread is still going.
I just get annoyed about people IMPROVISING.
Do the job properly, then your Alfa mechanic will charge you 1 hr instead of 5 hrs cause you did the wrong thing.
Make sure you use the correct bolt and make sure the plate (shim is between the bell housing and the starter motor.
There are 2 types of shim= one is part of the plate that goes between the engine + gearbox, and the other type is seperate.
And make sure the starter motor wires are not fouling the accelerator linkage (aust cars with carbys).
Ok,I have calmed down now.
Maybe I have made a point.

No worries at all mate. I'm all for using the right part. When i used the ally shim i was just makin sure that the bolt was the actual problem> So far the car, motor, flywheel, gearbox and starter motor have all come from different places so with most of this stuff I'm trying to determine where the problem lies before I chase down a solution.
When I shimmed her up she started working so I knew it was the bolt that was the problem. Now I just have to find one.
I have the late in place although I have to admit that I did bolt the gearbox back together with out it before I remembered.
I have a parts suplier here who may be able to help me but he needs a part number. Does anyone have the #?

After a little more investigation I have found a new supplier. the local Prestige car dealership can accesssome supplies in Sydney and order parts in for me. Hopefully overnight.
Moral of the story. Don't give up on your local suppliers. Best bit is they might be good for other parts in future. I have tried these guys before but they weren't as helpful so I wrote them off. Lesson learnt.
Thanks for the part number and suggestions, much appreciated.

Andy, Today was my first opportunity to fish my new IAP shoulder bolt out of my parts bin and measure it. I used a digital caliper but rounded off 1-2 thousands to get to a believable whole size. Overall length is 46mm not including the bolt head, i.e. just the length of the shank. The diameter of the threaded portion is 8mm and the diameter of the smooth shoulder is 9mm. The length of the threaded portion is about 18mm. Hope this helps if you elect to have one machined.
