Just an update on my engine ticking sound. After reading many different threads on oils and tappets someone mentioned burnishing the tapets with moly paste, so I decided to give it a try. Last night I pulled all 8 tappets and burnished the top and sides with 60% moly paste. I found two tappets in marginal shape, #2 intake with a small divot in the top, and #3 exhaust with spalling on the top. I replaced them with ones from my spare head after checking the thickness with a micrometer and matching them. This morning I drove the spider to work, and no more ticking!!!! I have 380 miles on it now, and will retorque head at 500. As for oil, I am undecided on either castorol syntech 20-50, or the shell rotella 20-50. So if you have an annoying ticking sound even though the valve clearances are good, check out the tappets.
