Yes - and of GREATER importance is the direction of the rods! Have a very careful gander at the off-set on the rods! (It's a very common mistake - even for an experienced eye...)
the rods were not removed from the pistons, so I should be ok as long as i put the pistons back in the correct numerical order, with the arrows facing front, right?

During the stripdown of an engine supposedly built "by a Lotus engineer", I found the 4-5-6 rods were in backwards. This caused the engine to develop a serious smoking habit in very short order after it was rebuilt.
Refer to the picture in the manual (even having just done one recently, I'm not about to try and describe the right way round), and be careful - it's easy to get yourself turned around if you have the block on a stand and are working upside down/rightside up as you put the pistons back in.
