From the files of the 750-101 discussion group on Yahoo, this link might be helpful (if it works). It's a Powerpoint file showing the orientation of the distributor, rotor and the drive coupling on the end of the distributor:

If you just took Dist. out it only goes back one way!

Of course some models differ!

I am so amazed that you guys post questions like your Alfa is the only one everbody has and we should know what model you are talking about so no brainer just set dizzy such a way and all engines will run perfectly.

Looking at some of your older posts I surmise that you are talking about a 2 liter. The dizzy only goes in one way. If you look at the bottom you will see a key that sits in the slot at the bottom of the distributor hole. Look a little closer and you will find that the key is slightly offset. With a proper O ring seal on the dizzy shaft, insert the shaft in the hole and push it down until it bottoms out. Then turn the distributor rotor while pushing down slightly and feel for it to drop down and engage the mating slot. That's it. I'm a little surprised that your mechanic wouldn't have known that.

Ok, now that I've answered your question I would like to request that you try a little punctuation and grammar in your posts. Us old guys have a hard enough time reading the small print without having to guess when a sentence starts and ends. It's not texting...

Update.

Spoke with the experienced mechanic (VW, not Alfa) this AM to review the oil pump installation (as part of engine assembly) so the dizzy could be installed in the proper orientation.

Papajam you are a good man!

Funny, there should be a 50/50 chance getting the water pump oriented correctly (or more since some should know how to install the pump) but I swear 90% of the time I find them 180 degrees off. It bugs me but not enough to tear them apart just for that...

Be careful inserting the diz into the oil pump slot. the piece on the end of the diz that fits into the oil pump drive CAN fit 180 degrees out of place. It does fit better one way than the other, and you can feel that. Do it wrong and it WILL add side loads to the oil pump drive shaft, and eventually break it.

And leave you stranded in the worst part of San Jose at 11 pm where even AAA will not come to get you.

It is (was) NOT funny. Quit laughing at me.

Robert

If you put it in 180 out the car will not run(unless you feel upto fliping wires around) But it only fits one way unless you use a hammer(in your tool it)
or crank the dizzy nut down to make it work ,but then it should not start!
No criticizum just trying to helpguess I have to be there

Did this when rebuilding, so the wires were new and newly installed.

General guidelines: Front cam lobes pointing outward (TDC), Distr rotor pointed forward, #1 wire at this point.

I actually had to put the diz drive piece on the diz shaft 180 deg out of phase to get it to fit just perfectly wrong.

And then it worked just fine for several weeks.

Until.......

You never learn from success. You just keep making mistakes until there is nothing left but the right way.
