Not necessarily. Crankshaft drag through liquid IS higher than oil vapor atmosphere, however the length of time an engine can live with oil starvation from lack of pick up immersion is very limited. Dry sump systems purpose is to constantly provide lubrication, with essentially no liquid in the pan proper. With this system scavenging pumps, (as many a seven in a Ferrari F-1 engine) can draw some engine power, but the advantage is worth the trade off. Thus the earlier recommendation of the old Veloce sump as the best of the wet sumps.

Chris, theoretically it can help, but I seriously doubt you could measure the difference on a dyno. I run a windage tray to keep the oil from aerating and to stiffen the main caps (just a little), not to increase power.

I was wondering where I can get some of that screen material for the oil pump pick up?

I was going to opt to buy a windage tray for the engine I have apart but I don't feel there is not enough to gain unless I was autocrossing or racing. That would be the ideal set up for that kind of activity.

Hi Chris,
There was a small chunk in my garage, I'm clueless where it came from. Perhaps Ausca years ago. I hope someone else might know. This IS the same punched steel sheet that is in Keith Goring's Autodelta GTA windage tray.

Oil Management

This is an interesting thread.

The photograph below show the sump from a TZ(?) Alfa seem to have put much effort into managing oil movement in the bottom of the sump.

You can get different types of perforated steel in McMaster Carr catalog.
I tried scanning the page but it failed for some reason. P# 732-329-3200

I just received my alfaholics 1750 windage tray. Can anyone advise on installation with regards to main cap nut torque and what you do for gaskets - o, 1 or 2 gaskets in the block / windage tray / sump sandwich.
Thanks
