mech. vvt question

i have been thinking about this

.if i delay the mech. vvt to advance, by lets say 1100 rpm more..to 2300 rpm.. the intake (vvt) is only open on intake stroke...this is near the bdc of travel or slightly before. the intake closes long before it reaches tdc..so i cannot see how this would harm my motor. the intake valve is nowhere near the piston....only the intake is need the piston at tdc of the exhaust stroke...then it is closed...am i wrong here?
