3.0L V6 with trashed liner -- salvageable?
This engine had spun 2/5 rod bearings. The #5 rod cap parted company with the rod and soon the rod was in fragments, along with the piston (which was rammed into the head and bent the #5 valves -- head may be OK after attention). The bottom skirt of the liner, where it seats into the block, was bashed about near the base, too. It seems to have been swaged out enough that I can't get the liner out. I suspect it may be usable if I can get a shop to bore out the liner at the base to part off the thick part of the liner wall, and then drive the remaining thin skirt down into the oil sump area.
Is this thing reasonable to attempt? The block is a 164S block and I'd like to keep it for rework and installation into a 164S which presently has an L block. The only differences between L and S blocks of which I am aware are (and no, it's not the oil squirters) the 10.0:1 pistons installed in the S block and the identifying number stamped on its exterior. I have a set of the pistons that I could install, but if I should ever sell the S I'd like not to have to explain about the L block number not meaning that the car is not full S spec. It might appear to be a cosmetic issue, but it's just cleaner to have everything labeled correctly. Not that I've ever sold a car yet.
But maybe the best solution is just to buy another S engine which hasn't grenaded itself internally.
