Question oil ring 1750

Hello, I'm rebuilding a GTV 1971, I'm doing the engine right now, I bought new ring set original AE borgo with 4mm oil ring.
My question is: Do I have to install the spiral spring that goes inside the oil ring?
I'm asking that questions because i got 2 other engine dismantled and all the pistons have the same kind of oil ring without the spiral spring.

any help will be appreciate

thanks

Oil rings for Alfas

I believe that conventional wisdom is to chuck out the oil rings that come with the piston sets, and use a more modern, multi-part oil ring. Typically, these will have two thin rings, and a squiggly thing that goes between them.

Hastings makes rings sized to fit Alfas. Again, all you need are the oil rings - the compression rings that come with the Borgo sets are probably OK (can anyone confirm this?). But, reality is that you can only buy piston rings in complete sets, so you end up buying all 12 rings. I use the Hastings compression and oil rings, and just put the Borgo stuff on the shelf.

I agree with Jay. I toss the stock rings and use a set, usually Hastings, that have a 3 piece oil ring. In my opinion, the stock one piece oil rings don't last nearly as long as a 3 piece.
If you use the Borgo rings, yes, install the spring. It's there to ensure proper ring to cylinder wall pressure.

And welcome to the BB, Andre!

Hi there,
I too have just bought a new piston and liner set (1750) Borgo new old stock which had been sitting on the shelf of an old Alfa dealer here since new.Do I understand that wisdom is that the rings are not good/won't last long?Should I consider using new rings?...or just install them as is?
Also what is the general opinion on how to line up the grooves....45-60 dgrees,or 180 inline with the pins,as was suggested in another thread
Cheers,
Fletch.
