What year car is it, it might have an engine immobilizer.

Sorry for the extremely short response earlier. The car might have an engine immobilizer system, which disables the fuel and/or ignition system so a thief cant steal the car without the original key. A small RFID chip in the key tells a receiver in the car that it's the correct key and enables the fuel and ignition systems. If that RFID chip in the key is damaged or missing then the car never receives that signal to say its the correct key and doesn't allow the engine to start. I've never heard of a car with a key code light, but then again, it is Italian. This could be rather difficult or very easy to fix/replace depending on where you live and where the closest Alfa dealership is.

For Americans, the closest Alfa dealership is 1994.

My 156 suffered this problem 2 months ago, I just disconnected the battery, wait about 2 minutes and connected it again, no problems since then.

If this doesn't work you will need to go to the local Alfa workshop with your Alfa key code (the one written in the car documentation)

Paco.
