If you only had $300.....?

Hi,
I'm trying to decide how best to use $300 on my gtv and have narrowed my choices to two. The first is to get a re-conditioned TA. I currently have an old Shankle Sure-Start system that works OK but I'm tempted to go back to the original design. The second is to get an electronic ignition distributor from centerline Centerline Products: Ignition System: Electronic Ignition. Any advice?

I'd get the electronic ignition and then get the TA rebuilt later (and dump the SSS) when more $$$ is available. I'm assuming it's running with the SSS set-up now. Reasoning is that the SSS is operating as a manual choke would be - the rebuilt TA isn't going to make it run better but just be "correct" and more conveinent. Theorically, it will run better with the electronic ignition. Points start to wear out from day 1. If you get the electronic ignition, set your plugs with a .005 greater gap.

My brain was thinking along the lines of Sniady's suggestion but my heart is tugging me toward the electronic ignition.

I was hesitant to post this question, knowing that it would not be of any interest to most on the BB, so I appreciate both of your responses. Some of us (me) may take the "poor man's sports car" idea too literally and I'm afraid I've had to adopt the "death by a thousand cuts" approach to restoration in order to avoid the admission that I'm completely insane putting money into my car (third alfa). However, I wonder whether there is a thread somewhere on the BB for posts relevant to those who can only afford restoration in small increments like me. I can imagine several posts scattered elsewhere that would fit with such a thread. Short-term fixes that allow one to enjoy their cars while saving up for the BIG projects. Like the tricks used to fill cracks in dashboards, replacing Burman steering gear oil with grease to reduce leakage.....These are very useful ideas. I can think of many other items I'd like to see discussed that would not be of interest to the folks who are doing the incredible $$$$ restorations. Like where to buy cheapo Hemmings-type seat covers to fit flying buttress seats till I can save $1K for the real deal. Anyway, thanks again and I think I'll be calling Centerline (lowmileage wins).

It isn't stock, but it looks like a very nice ignition...

Personally, I hate points. I've dealt with them on a few motorcycles, and replaced them with electronic systems when I could.

I'd also be interested in hearing more great ideas for those not interested in recreating a time-warp car.

Like seats. I don't want a Recaro racing seat, but I'd like something that's comfortable, adjustable, and doesn't smell like cat pee like the one seat my car came with.

My mum always told me, "You don't have to spend it." And that's worked out pretty good for me.

You could always though, drop $35 for some Italian air horns on IAP.

I would say toss the points but there is a cheaper way. Just get the dizzy off a newer alfa with the coil and coil driver.

75 bucks will do you a pertronix ignitor II module. You'll then have 225 for other stuff.

are ts engines so expensive in the us? they get scrapped here because of lack of interest.... a shame really...

. I think the Pertronix $75 unit just replaces the points set-up without having the High energy output of the other unit. Still, a worthwhile replacement.

Go to a junkyard and rip the complete EDIS system out of a 90s Ford Escort or purchase one from ebay. Should cost less than $100.

Then purchase one of these Main Page - Autosport Labs
You should have enough change out of you $300 to have a machine shop fit the 36 tooth gear to your harmonic balancer.

Then you'll have a fully programmable, high energy, ultra reliable ignition system.
